As a result, many parents, particularly those from limited-income households, are forced to make a tough choice between finding work or finding care for their children. e Academy, located at 3807 Telstar Circle in Huntsville, was founded in 1996 by Dr. Sylvia Collins. e nonprofit accepts children from the age of three weeks to 12 years and operates on a sliding fee scale. e Academy also accepts CMA, or childcare management agency, subsidies. "Our belief is that just because kids are impoverished doesn't mean they should be denied certain experiences in life," said Collins. e Academy's curriculum includes sign language and foreign language classes. Tequila Slocum, the assistant director, said they strive to develop moral values and character-building skills. During 2023, Redstone partnered with the Academy to purchase and install playground equipment. at equipment became the Academy's first commercial playground, Collins said.
