Brady hit the ground, rocked backward and held his left knee — the same one he tore up in the 2008 season opener that forced him to miss the rest of the year. Even before he limped off the practice field, Twitter went nuts, and not just because it was a two-time MVP quarterback. Every twisted ankle and sprain has become a trending topic this preseason, giving the impression there's an injury epidemic at training camps from coast to coast. Teams say that's all it is — an impression. ''A lot of times there's a little bit of panic because all we hear about is all the guys who get hurt in training camp,'' said Denver Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback-turned-boss John Elway. ''That hasn't changed from when I played.'' What has changed is how that information is disseminated. Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, co-chair of the NFL's competition committee, noted that while some big-name players have been lost to major injuries, like torn ACLs, every bump and bruise seems to quickly become part of the national narrative. With so many bloggers competing with traditional news sources for eardrums and eyeballs, ''what goes on in the rush to break news now is that people don't have the same stan- dards to confirm the injury,'' McKay said. ''They want to make a splash on Twitter and sometimes it's not reality.'' All this in a year when the NFL put limits on padded practices, issued new mandates on thigh and knee pads and made rules changes to protect players on both sides of the ball. Elway said he doesn't think there are any more injuries than before, and McKay, whose committee recommends rules and policy changes See MEDIA, page 2B NATIONALS 6, GIANTS 5 Around town Fall baseball signups The Shasta-Tehama Crushers Fall Baseball Team will be holding signups/tryouts 5 p.m. Thursday at the West Valley High School baseball field. Bartoli said her Achilles, shoulder, hips and lower back hurt continuously when she plays. Giants rally, but can't catch Nats WASHINGTON (AP) — With the outcome of the game riding on his ability to snare a liner in the gap, Denard Span began his pursuit of the baseball by taking a step in the wrong direction. From that point, Washington's center fielder made all the right moves. Span made a diving catch in deep center field with two runners on base for the final out, and the Nationals held off the San Francisco Giants 6-5 Wednesday night for their fifth straight victory. Jordan Zimmermann (14-6) increased his NL-leading win total, allowing one run in seven innings and outpitching Tim Lincecum (6-12). Washington matched its longest winning streak of the season and moved within one victory of .500 for the first time since July 20. After scoring once in the ninth off Rafael Soriano, the Giants put runners on first and second with two outs. Hunter Pence hit a drive to left-center and Span ran it down, sliding onto the warning track after making the grab and preserving the win. ''I actually took a false step, kind of stepped in a little bit, and then I just broke for the ball and put my head down for two or three steps and was able to, you know, come up for the ball,'' Span said. Until the ball landed in his mitt, Span had all sorts of doubts as to whether he would be able to make the catch. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs was suspended Wednesday for a Week 1 game against Green Bay for a violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy. The 49ers, in announcing the penalty jointly with the NFL, say Dobbs will be eligible to return to the active roster on Sept. 9, a day after the reigning NFC champion Niners' season opener at home against the Packers. He can still practice with the team, attend meetings and other activities. On Wednesday afternoon, the team was holding meetings before an early evening practice. Dobbs wasn't immediately available for comment, and the suspension was announced just after coach Jim Harbaugh addressed the media for the day. ''The San Francisco 49ers organization supports the NFL's code of conduct policy and their recent decision regarding Demarcus,'' general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. Dobbs ended last season on injured reserve with a right knee problem, missing the final three regular-season games after getting hurt against Miami on Dec. 9. He was arrested Nov. 30 — his 25th birthday — for suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello would not say whether the suspension stems from that arrest or a subsequent violation. The California Highway Patrol said that Dobbs was involved in a single-car accident in which he hit a chain-link fence and a bush but didn't sustain any injuries. Dobbs later expressed how sorry he was, and lucky, too. Just more than a week after his own incident, Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jerry Brown died in a Dec. 8 accident in which defensive lineman teammate Josh Brent was the driver. Brent is charged with intoxication manslaughter. See 49ERS, page 2B
