They believed the opening of the flowers symbolized the sun and the perfection of an orderly life. By 800 A.D., only royal and noble Japanese families were allowed to cultivate them. The name chrysanthemum actually comes from a Greek word meaning golden flower. The Mediterranean Chrysanthemum was a golden-yellow flower from which garlands were made to protect against demons. Mums were introduced to Europe in the 1600's and North America in 1798. Chrysanthemums are the colorful queens of flowers that bloom in the fall. Most garden centers will have mums in by mid-August. They are wonderful container plants, but are quite thirsty, so make sure they don't dry out. They must also have adequate drainage or they will develop stem rot. It is said "when mums start to bloom in the garden, it is a sure sign of fall." Just a personal note. When I was a young girl in the late 40's and early 50's in Corning, the dog days of summer were spent swimming in Thomas Creek and stopping for spudnuts at the Blue Feather afterwards. Movies at Rodgers Theater (25 cents admission, 10 cents for popcorn, 10 cents for a coke and 5 cents for a candy bar, 50 cents went a long way then) and meeting friends at The Fountain across the street from the theater after the movies. Helping my mother can the produce from her garden and standing in front of the swamp cooler to cool off. Now with air-conditioning, it's hard to remember how great that felt. The pace of life seemed much slower. Summer seemed like forever, and then school started. What wonderful days those seemed to be. The term dog days refers to the sultry days from the end of July to the middle of August. This originated in Roman times when the star Sirius (the dog star) rose and set at the same time as the sun. They believed that the star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather, causing creatures to become languid and man to be plagued with disease and lethargy. During these hot days, the best thing to do is to look ahead to autumn. As summer days shorten into fall a flower we can plan for would be the reds, bronzes, gold and soft oranges of chrysanthemums to create beautiful harmonious fall colors. Chrysanthemums or "mums" originated in China and were cultivated in Chinese gardens for more than 2500 years before they came west. They were considered one of the four "noble plants", the other three being plum, bamboo and orchid. About 400 A.D. they were brought to Japan by Buddhist monks where they eventually became the symbol of the emperor of Japan. Quake Felt In Tehama County At 11 O'Clock A distinct earthquake shock, apparently centered in the Paskenta district, was felt in Tehama county at 11 o'clock this forenoon.
