The Kappa Courtyard has long been a treasured sanctuary
from the ac vity of Greek Town. However, in recent years the
deteriora ng pa o, uneven bricks and poor drainage have
made it less than appealing for the Kappa House residents and
their guests.
The Theta Chapter House Board plans to give our treasured
courtyard some Kappa love this summer. The House Board is not
just upda ng the pa o—they're redefining it with a combina on
of lush greenery, added ligh ng and refurbished furniture.
The Kappa Courtyard will receive new landscaping that will
enliven the space and help address some of the drainage issues
the courtyard currently presents. Other updates will include
new pa o surfaces of pa ern flagstone and brick, complete with
a fleur-de-lis brick insert. The pa o will be further enhanced
Our Secret Garden: The Kappa Courtyard
with a natural stone si ng wall, providing addi onal sea ng
and a focal point for the space.
Path lights will be added to illuminate pathways and define the
edges of the pa o and up-lights will be added to highlight trees,
shrubs, and other ver cal elements. To further enhance the
ligh ng design, in-lights will be installed to illuminate sea ng
areas and other focal points, crea ng a cozy and invi ng
atmosphere that is perfect for relaxing or entertaining guests.
Addi onally, two elements will be added as memorials to Kappas
who died this past year: a mul - ered fountain along the west
courtyard wall in memory of Susie Vollenweider Ryan (Theta,
1963); and a new bench in memory of Kathy Schultz (Theta, 1987).
The courtyard transforma on promises to turn the Kappa Court-
yard into a nature retreat that is both beau ful and func onal.
