F or a demonstration of the enduring nature of the PIKE family, look no further than Mike Risk '70. Mike has celebrated his 50th year with the fraternity and has remained deeply involved with the brotherhood every step of the way. Mike pledged in fall 1969 and served as new member educator and president, eventually leading the chapter to earn the Smythe Award in 1972. Alpha Phi provided more than just personal development opportunities and a professional network; it was a home away from home. "I have a younger sister and brother who were not able to attend college, so I feel quite blessed that the college experience was made available to me. My brothers became like family." After graduation in 1974, Mike served as a chapter consultant for a year before being asked to fill that same role for the national staff. "I was fortunate to be an officer at the time the fraternity was piloting a new membership management and education program called PIKAMEP," Mike recalled. "Alpha Phi embraced the programming and it really elevated chapter operations and our brotherhood." After moving to Memphis in 1975, Mike began a career in sales management, and his ongoing volunteerism with PIKE continued when the chapter at the University of Memphis asked him to get involved as their Chapter Advisor. His work with major fashion brands, including Revlon, eventually took Mike from Tennessee to Texas, but his commitment to PIKE remained strong. Today, Mike serves as Capital Campaign Chairman for the Alpha Phi House Corporation as we work to improve 2112 Lincoln Way. "We are renovating one of Pi Kappa Alpha's most beautiful houses," Mike shared. "This worthy challenge allows me to speak with hundreds of our brothers and be rewarded with the more than $1.1 million pledged to date." Why has he remained connected with PIKE over the years? Mike's answer is simple: "I want future brothers to have an even better opportunity to grow and experience the tremendous teachings and life skills that I believe can only be found in a fraternity." For Mike, the key to that goal is alumni support. "Alumni involvement provides crucial volunteer support and financial strength." While Mike was working as a chapter consultant in 1974, his future wife, Renee, was the assistant editor for Shield & Diamond magazine and coordinator for consultant mail and reports. They met due to their mutual involvement with the fraternity, married in 1978, and have been together for 45 years. They have a son, Michael '01, and a daughter, Lauren, who is married to Todd Stegmiller '00. If you'd like to get in touch with Mike, email him at mikesrisk@gmail.com.
