PAGE 2 TAU TALK I owa State University provides for its entrepreneurially inclined students through CYstarters, an 11-week summer program that supports undergraduates and recent alumni as they pursue a startup or business idea. According to isupjcenter.org, "Each student has the opportunity to receive $6,500 or up to $13,000 (per team), along with mentorship, accountability, and educational sessions on how to build a business." Alpha Tau Omega members Collin Gauck '22 and Jacob Kautman '22 joined the program in 2023 with Campus Town Trading, a financial education and assistance brand created for anyone looking to begin investing/trading in financial markets. The subscription service has continued to grow in the months since Cystarters, and the future is bright for these business-savvy brothers. "Collin and I plan on moving to Tampa, Florida, where we will pursue this venture full time at the end of 2024," Jacob shared. "We have plans to start further ventures once we move, but plan on innovating and growing Campus Town Trading for as long as we can!" What might those ventures be? "Who knows?" Collin replied. "But I'm excited for the future!" Collin graduated in December 2023 with a bachelor's degree in finance and is now pursuing a master's in entrepreneurship at Iowa State. Jacob is on track to graduate with a bachelor's degree in history in May and also plans to earn a master's in entrepreneurship. Both young men credit Alpha Tau Omega with providing vital leadership skills, professional experience, and a wide network that will support them as they enter the workforce. "Chapter events, both professional and social, taught me to carry myself," Collin shared. "That carried over into business pitch competitions and assisted me in winning prize money in 15-plus competitions." Jacob offers his sincere thanks to House Director Mike Kelly and Bill Burke '74 for helping him along the way. The undergraduates consistently encouraged Collin and Jacob and enjoyed following their journey to professional success. "We're always being asked about our business competitions and other progress," Collin said. "We even had a brother participate in a summer-long business program because of our referral. I'm proud to represent ATΩ throughout our involvement across campus!" Regarding advice for other young entrepreneurs, the pair agree on a central theme: dedication. "To achieve success, you'll have to sacrifice time and fully commit to your venture," Jacob said. "And surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share the same goals and aspirations." Collin encourages hopefuls to understand that sacrifice and finding a balance between hard work and rest is key. "Nothing will ever get done if you don't apply your knowledge and take action." Collin was born and raised in Ames and enjoys sports, video games, fishing, and managing his side hustles. Jacob shares the campus with his father, Andrew, who works in the athletics department, and his younger brother, who is a freshman this year. He enjoys hanging out with friends and attending sporting events.
