BACK BAY BETA Beta Upsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Spring 2024 A s I write this, we are readying our somewhat delayed 110th anniversary weekend on April 19-21, 2024. Hopefully, many of you can attend. You have probably received emails from some of your contemporaries suggesting you come as well as a registration link to let us know you are coming. These opportunities don't come up often, and if you miss them, you'll also miss the chance to reconnect with old friends and to make some new ones. ALUMNI SUPPORT AND PLANNED EVENTS Putting these events together takes a team, and Ken "Pound" Bryan '88 and Alan "Tex" Laves '82 were instrumental in leading our efforts. We also had great help from Ken Shine '85, Phil Johnson '91, Frank Leibly '93, Chris Briere '19, and Raul Campos '27. The happy hour kicking off the weekend will be the first event with alcohol at the house since our restart in 2012. We are following Beta's new rules for "wet" alumni events by hiring a bartender, limiting the drinks to beer and wine, and checking IDs for younger Betas. Following the happy hour, we have dinners planned by era with additional help from Herman Marshall '78, Brian DiVasta '95, Phil LaFond '98, Mehul Shah '01, and Jaydeep Bardhan '00. That's 49 years of Betas working together for a great weekend! Alumni will pursue their own fun in Boston during the day on Saturday, reconvening at the Cask and Flagon Saturday night. Sunday morning will feature a brunch back at the Beta House to wrap things up. EVENT BUDGETING After our 100th and 105th, we heard alumni asking us to make the events less formal and less expensive. We have done that with our agenda as well as with support from some alumni leaders who are directly covering some costs. This also allows us to make the event free for the undergraduates and their guests. They are excited to meet the alumni and learn more of our Chapter's history, so we will regale them with stories from days of yore. If you can't attend the 110th, I hope you will plan to come back to a future event. Our Chapter is lucky to have our annual Euchre Tournament in the fall in New Orleans (contact Tex Laves '82 at alaves@akingump.com) and monthly alumni Zoom calls (contact Scott Brennan '80 at scotebrennan@yahoo.com). Whenever a "long lost" Brother decides to attend one of these, they always say, "I wish I had done this sooner." Don't let that happen to you! Looking forward to seeing you!
