Those decorations were a BIG deal in 1962—maybe they still are. In those days, the telephone company put up poles in our yards to support the displays. My biggest takeaway? Be careful what you order! When the telephone company asked what size pole we would like, I said two 12-foot poles sounded pretty good to me. Little did I realize, that is really high when you are climbing scaffolding every night to decorate! We had about 42 members then, who at the end of the week were awfully tired but also very proud. Our winning display was pictured in the 1963 UF winter yearbook! P.S. My years in the old house were wonderful—my favorite all-nighter treat was peanut butter and honey sandwiches."
