They will take you around the corners and over the hills once traveled at high speed by the world's top sports car drivers. Find out about Dicken's Ditch, Kimberly's Korner and Schoolhouse Straight. Fourteen historical markers are placed around these winding circuits to commemorate the big names and the big events that occurred here between 1950 and 1952. Imagine hay bales on the corners and thousands of cheering fans lining the roads of these one- of-a-kind open- road-racing circuits around Elkhart Lake. Close your eyes and picture world champion Phil Hill in a C-type Jaguar crossing the finish line first, after fighting off challenges from classic sports cars of every kind. Or envision John Fitch in a Cunningham C4R cruising to victory after 30 laps in front of an estimated crowd of 100,000 race fans. Two-hundred-thirty-eight (238) cars in all entered the three races held in 1952. Race circuits around Elkhart Lake are now listed on the Wisconsin and National Register of Historic Places. In July 2006, historical markers were placed around the race circuits and dedicated at a ceremony where racers John Fitch and Phil Hill were honored guests - more than fifty years after their legendary victories.
