Relive the excitement and check out the historic
open-road racing circuits of Elkhart Lake. They
will take you around the corners and over the
hills once traveled at high speed by the world's
top sports car drivers.
Find out about Dicken's Ditch, Kimberly's Korner
and Schoolhouse Straight. Fourteen historical
markers are placed around these winding
circuits to commemorate the big names and the
big events that occurred here between 1950 and
1952.
Imagine hay bales on the corners and thousands
of cheering fans lining the roads of these one-
of-a-kind open- road-racing circuits around
Elkhart Lake. Close your eyes and picture world
champion Phil Hill in a C-type Jaguar crossing the
finish line first, after fighting off challenges from
classic sports cars of every kind. Or envision John
Fitch in a Cunningham C4R cruising to victory
after 30 laps in front of an estimated crowd of
100,000 race fans. Two-hundred-thirty-eight
(238) cars in all entered the three races held in
1952.
Race circuits around Elkhart Lake are now listed
on the Wisconsin and National Register of
Historic Places. In July 2006, historical markers
were placed around the race circuits and
dedicated at a ceremony where racers John Fitch
and Phil Hill were honored guests - more than
fifty years after their legendary victories.
