ILLINOIS BETA CHAPTER A t least nine, but likely more, ΣΑΕ servicemen returned home in June 1919 on the USS Leviathan. Lt. Deloss A. Grant, Indiana 1919 was assigned to the ship and is pictured here. Others might be Paul Sutton, Oklahoma 1918, Harry F. Robb, Millikin 1917, Louis W. Mack, Illinois 1906, Leo H. Kelley, Illinois 1919, Dr. Payson L. Nusbaum, Northwestern 1908, Wayne L. Allen, Northwestern 1915, Romney Davis Strickler, Northwestern 1918, and Harvey L. Goodrow Jr., Beloit 1918. More than 8,000 members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon served during World War I. It was 106 years ago that the first American troops landed in Port Saint-Nazaire, France, to aid allies in their fight against Germany. The "Doughboys," as they were known to their British counterparts, were undertrained and under-equipped but ready to fight. By the time the war ended in November 1918, two million American servicemen were in France and more than 100,000 had lost their lives in battle.
