THETA THETA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY | UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN | WINTER 2024 T his year marks our 111th at the best location on campus, and it has been a while since we provided an update on the physical structure at 548 South State. One key focus area has been making necessary upgrades to our commercial kitchen. With updated equipment and a new crew, we have brought meal services back to the Chapter House after a two-year absence. We are pleased to provide the bonding opportunity that communal meals create. We recently replaced the boiler and continue to knock out roof, electrical, and plumbing issues as they rear their heads. WE HAVE 25 BROTHERS LIVING IN THE CHAPTER HOUSE THIS YEAR. Nationwide, there has been a trend of new members only living in their house for one year or, sometimes, not at all. The Chapter is working to increase this number and recently voted in a bylaw change that requires living-in for one year. We work with the Chapter regularly to ensure we are doing our part to make it a desirable choice. A major House Corporation goal is to pay off our existing mortgage; the outstanding balance is down to about $112,000. Of course, there are big benefits to reducing the interest expense. When possible over the past few years, we have made additional principal payments. We appreciate your contributions, which help us afford these extra amounts. The House Corporation also wants to keep connecting alumni on football weekends! Each year, we host a Homecoming celebration at the Chapter House (date and game time typically set during the spring). This year, we also hosted a tailgate away from the house during the Purdue game and plan to make the offsite alumni tailgate an annual event. We're working on picking a target game as a pretty good-looking home schedule comes up (thanks to our influx of Pac10 schools and Texas on the docket). More details to follow. WE CONTINUE TO SEEK ADDITIONAL MANPOWER FOR THE HOUSE CORPORATION AND ALUMNI ADVISORY BOARD. The House Corporation holds monthly meetings and can accommodate Zoom attendance. Our focus is primarily on maintaining the physical structure and meeting with the undergraduate officers to stay updated on their efforts to keep the Chapter heading in a positive direction. The Alumni Advisory Board can also accommodate remote help and focuses on mentoring the individual officers to help them succeed in their roles. If you have interest or questions, please contact either Dave Train '84 (david.train@edag.com) or Dan Page '87 (dpage345@gmail.com). Another way we are providing Chapter and House Corp updates is through a monthly email newsletter! If you are not already signed up, please do so using the instructions on the back page.
