e Washington Alpha Delt 5 W hen Terry Snyder '62 and his close friend, the late David Warrick '62, went through recruitment, several friends from high school were encouraging about joining them at Alpha Delta Phi. Terry and David agreed, and looking back, Terry thinks it was their supportive nature that convinced him he'd chosen the right fraternity. "The membership was outstanding, including old and new friends," Terry recalled. "We enjoyed a general fellowship and looked out for one another, during and after college." Terry feels lucky that his class enjoyed a high-quality Chapter House, which had been renovated a few years before they joined. Although Terry was busy working his way through college as an x-ray technician, the Chapter worked to accommodate his schedule by fulfilling his ADPhi responsibilities on weekends. "The fraternity had a great location and great people." A N O U TSTA N D I N G J O U R N E Y In those days, students were required to join ROTC for two years; this led Terry to a unique and challenging career. After two years, he was accepted to the senior program and decided to join the Air Force after graduating (which was the same year he married his wife, Anise Hawthorne Snyder, a Kappa Kappa Gamma at UW). Those 24 years took Terry and his family from Greece and France to D.C., followed by the Philippines and Vietnam. Toward the end of his military career, he worked in the Pentagon—two years for the Joint Chiefs of Staff followed by eight years in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Terry retired as a colonel and went on to work for a not-for-profit logistics company for 17 years, fully retiring in his mid-70s. After nearly 40 years living in D.C., Terry and his wife moved to the Chesapeake shore town of Oxford, Maryland, where they enjoy life near the water. They have two daughters and five grandchildren and have lived in seven states as well as four other countries. "We have a little boat and still travel whenever possible," Terry said. "We've been back to Paris several times and spent other vacations on river cruises." P R E S E RV I N G O U R B O N D S While Washington Chapter had its hard times in the decades since his graduation, Terry was encouraged by the Brothers he met during a Chapter House visit in May. "They treated me royally, and it looked like it was back to the organization that I once knew," he said. Terry also appreciated the opportunity to purchase inscribed bricks for the Chapter House. The one he purchased for himself and David can be seen near the doorstep. "I aribute much of my life and career success to those four years with a great group of guys at Alpha Delta Phi." Terry kneels by his inscribed Chapter House brick. It reads: "Terry W. Snyder '62 David L. Warrick '62 Xaipe – MGA Buddies." Continue improving the culture of the house. House culture has improved greatly in the past year, and it is of the utmost importance that progress continues. We look to continue strengthening our brotherhood and sense of ambition, which will hopefully culminate in an EO Blackman win next summer. Reach the top of the Greek system academically. Academics have always been among the highest priorities here at the house, and we're determined to be amongst the very best in the Greek system when it comes to our grades. Grow philanthropy events to greater heights. This past year, we ran the Bubble Bash auction for the first time in five years. It was a great success, as we were able to obtain $48,000 for the Stanley Stamm Camp. We aim to raise that number even higher this year with our newfound experience from running the event once already. You can reach Terry at terrywsnyder@verizon.net or (703) 408-4773.
