It was easy after a few short weeks of recruitment, where he pledged alongside his childhood best friend, Peter Brierton '12 (both were introduced to DU through Peter's cousin Sean Conway '09). It was also an easy choice to continue serving the Chapter on the Alumni Board. And it was easy again to lend his support to the Honoring the Past, Building for the Next Century campaign. "The best nights at DU weren't out on the town or through a packed social calendar—they were the ones hanging out at the house with brothers from every class, and I treasured that," Matt said. DU also taught him responsibility and accountability by working alongside his brothers (most notably in the roles of finance and scholarship chairman). "While there were countless moments of fun and brotherhood, my pride in our organization gave me purpose and led me to action, finding ways to improve our Chapter, house, and brotherhood." Matt stayed on campus an extra three semesters for his master's degree, serving as the on- campus Chapter advisor to stay involved. When he graduated and moved to Chicago, it made sense to join the Alumni Board, where he is now president. "My primary goals as president were to help the Chapter limit risk and to increase more junior representation on the Board—both of which I've accomplished during my tenure." Matt is also proud to serve on the Alumni Board as his DU peers run this historic capital campaign. Through years of discussion, it became clear to the Board that it was time to upgrade the Chapter House interior while preserving its architectural significance to the community. "Giving doesn't have to mean committing tens of thousands of dollars," he said. "Every little bit helps, and even a small donation from every member of a pledge class can mean a lot to this campaign." Matt hopes brothers from his era (and younger) will reflect on what DU means to them and join him accordingly. "I am proud to donate to a cause that will help our Chapter House stand the test of another 100 years."
