Why is it that the more we acquire, the more we want? Could it be that happiness is not found in having all we want? Ever since the beginning of time, mankind has been bent on wanting more. Adam and Eve lived in a perfect world and had it all and yet they were tempted to partake of the only thing they could not have They chose to be discontented and therefore lost what they had. Unless we judge the fi rst couple too harshly, we repeat the same decision time and time again. We often get enamored with something new which leads us to look at what we do have with contempt. We must realize that contentment does not come easy. It is in our DNA to always want more. So, how are we to cultivate contentment? One of the fi rst things we can do is take inventory of what we do have. Many times, we forget the blessings all around us. We may not have monetary wealth, but we are rich in so many other ways. It is a sad commentary on human nature, but sometimes we don't appreciate what we do have until we lose it. Life is more about relationships than material possessions and social stature. We need to learn to be thankful for the little things in life. Novelist, Pearl S. Buck said it this way, "Many people lose the small joys in the hope for the big happiness."
