SIGMA PHI EPSILON 3 From the heart M itch Salyers '93 is no stranger to serving Indiana Alpha. From undergraduate experiences as chapter historian and secretary to his time as a chapter counselor, Mitch has grown through his SigEp membership while doing whatever he can for the brotherhood. Today, he is glad to see a positive trajectory for the chapter's future. Fraternal Values "I was looking for people that I shared common interests with," Mitch said about his decision to join SigEp. The brotherhood's shared ideals resonated with Mitch, compelling him to contribute to the group through collaborative efforts. In his undergraduate roles, Mitch learned plenty about decision-making and the functionalities of an organization. Even through probation, Mitch and the executive board navigated challenges to return to good standing. "Sigma Phi Epsilon taught me how to function in this world." Life Beyond Purdue After graduating with an industrial engineering degree, Mitch found his way into a retail management role. He had success while refining business skills, even earning two manager of the year awards, though Mitch eventually decided to shift to teaching. Mitch earned an elementary license while teaching preschool, spending the next 12 years as a general elementary instructor. He was one of the outstanding teachers of his district prior to becoming a secondary math teacher, eventually moving to purchasing a preschool in Franklin, Indiana, with his wife. Following her passing, Mitch took over as director of the preschool this year and is proud to have developed the school as a family business. Staying Involved When reading an issue of From the Heart, Mitch decided to contact Brian Rodell '99 about the chapter's status. Their connection led to Mitch becoming Balanced Man steward for the chapter prior to the chapter's closing. Once SigEp returned to campus, Mitch was nominated for his counselor role. Mitch's teaching background prepared him for guiding young men as they figured out how their new brotherhood's culture alongside the national organization of SigEp. With a substance-free facility still undergoing construction at Purdue, the new brotherhood is navigating the obstacles and challenges associated with colonization. Mitch sees a bright future ahead for SigEp at Purdue, and he is confident that today's members can properly represent the fraternity on campus. "We've got a strong group of young men who have the right moral compass," Mitch said. It's up to today's members to stay on the right track for goals like rechartering, membership growth, and reaching the top in academics. Alumni mentoring can help steer the ship in the right direction, so Mitch urges brothers to volunteer their time for SigEp. You can connect with Mitch at salyers5725@gmail.com.
