Meals will be delivered for those who will not have a Thanksgiving meal. Last year the church and community volunteers delivered and provided approximately 900 meals and hosted approximately 100 people at the Parish Hall. This year, the church anticipates 1,100 meals through delivery and in- person dining, said the Rev. Toni Belhu, rector of St. Francis. Anyone who needs a Thanksgiving meal is encouraged to come to the Mission on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, beginning at 11am and take a meal home. Director Terry Hagaman says there will be at least 650 meals served that day. Christmas Eve meals will also be served on Dec. 24 at 11am. Fruit baskets, gloves and scarves will be distributed with the meal distributions. There is a need for monetary donations to help with the meals not only on the holidays but throughout the year. Hagaman said he estimates there will be a need for 43,000 meals next year. "Your gift can help to provide meals to the hungry in the county," he said. Donations of $5 will provide one meal; $20 will feed four people; and so forth. This federally funded program assists eligible households that are in an immediate and life- threatening heating or cooling related crisis. Heating assistance includes electricity, wood, coal, fuel oil, kerosene, or gas. North Carolina continues to fi nd ways to streamline policy and procedures to help serve as many households as possible in the most effi cient ways. Again, this year households may apply for assistance by phone using telephonic signatures. This will allow more clients to apply via telephone and reduce the processing time by eliminating the signature requirement for applications. A telephonic signature is a type of electronic signature that uses an individual's verbal attestation in place of an ink signature. Applicants should have a past due notice from the vendor of their heating source or have 10% or less gas in their tank, or 15 inches or less of fuel oil or kerosene or have a limited supply of wood or kerosene for portable heaters. Benefi ts may vary based upon the amount needed to alleviate the crisis. An eligible household may receive assistance more than one time during the State Fiscal Year (July through June); however, the maximum benefi t cannot exceed $600 per fi scal year. To qualify households must have income equal to or less than 150 percent of the federal poverty level, contain a US Citizen or eligible alien, and must be in a heating or cooling related crisis. All Household income must be verifi ed by pay stubs, some other means or through an employer. If a person is receiving other services administered by the Department of Social Services where income was verifi ed, that can be used in some cases. However, it is strongly recommended that applicants provide at least a month's worth of income to determine eligibility. This will help ensure that applications are processed as quickly as possible and avoid longer wait times for consumers.
