THE TIGER SIG Page 3 F ew people can say they spent their summer ziplining out of a Blackhawk one week and working a desk job the next, but that is precisely what Evan Langdon '24 spent summer 2023 doing. The history and political science major spent the first part of his summer at the Army Air Assault School in Fort Benning, Georgia. There, Evan learned about air assault operations with the Army's helicopters, culminating in his ziplining adventure. After training, Evan returned to his hometown of Kansas City, where he spent seven weeks interning for a solar panel company. At the end of those seven weeks, Evan finished his summer in Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he completed a 35-day training prerequisite for anyone hoping to be commissioned into the Army. Evan's summer adventures are a product of his time in the Army ROTC program at Mizzou. He is also a member of the Missouri National Guard. "It's something I have always wanted to do, and it's been very fulfilling," Evan said. "I don't want to work in an office my whole life." JUMPING IN THE DEEP END With ROTC requiring a lot of early mornings and late nights each week, Evan still makes time for Sigma Chi. Being one of the founders of the soon-to-be reestablished Chapter, Evan has seen a fraternity grow around him. "It's been awesome because I didn't have to insert myself into a Chapter and have to mold into their culture," Evan said. "Here, you're watching the culture build around you." "The Brothers I met were genuine and cared about one another. It was clear they were an actual brotherhood." "Sigma Chi is a great community that I can fall back on when I need it. Everyone treats each other as a brother, which is very special to me." Evan caught the initial wave of the rechartering his sophomore year and always wanted to be a part of Greek life. He jumped right in and has become a respected voice over the past year and a half, serving as questor and public relations and marketing chairman. "Questor was hard because you have to wrangle people for their dues, which is always an issue, but I had a fun time doing PR&M. It allowed me to work on the creative side." A PIVOTAL MOMENT In his limited free time, Evan enjoys skateboarding, longboarding on the MKT Trail, and driving around his manual Ford Focus ST. He is also a talented tennis player and hopes to represent Mizzou's club tennis team this semester. However, representing the University of Missouri was not something Evan always planned to do. With his parents attending the University of Kansas and growing up a big KU basketball fan, Evan planned to attend Kansas. "I was all enrolled at KU; I even had a dorm set up there. But right at the peak of COVID, my mom got laid off, and since I live on the Missouri side of Kansas City, I had to rethink everything," Evan shared. "I decided in-state was a better option and I went with Mizzou— and honestly, it was a great decision. I've had a blast here; even though it was the school I grew up 'not liking,' it has been an awesome experience. I don't regret anything." With his time in Columbia wrapping up, we can all agree that Evan made two great decisions: attending Mizzou and helping recharter the Sigma Chi fraternity on its campus.
