The Rutherfordton Garden Club is celebrating its 90th year, having been established on June 19, 1933. At the time of the organization, its purpose was to support the Norris Public Library. The Garden Club held fundraising activities to assist in supporting the library and 90 years later continues to maintain the grounds around the library, the Rutherfordton Clubhouse and entrances to the Rutherfordton cemetery. On October 4 Mayor Jimmy Dancy offi cially signed a resolution celebrating the club's 90th birthday. The resolution also recognized the garden club's fi nancial support to Ruff'ton Roots and Habitat for Humanity. The Garden Club hopes to add to its membership, currently 43 members, and is also focusing on maintaining the entrances to the town. "The town of Rutherfordton expresses its appreciation and gratitude to the Rutherfordton Garden Club for their outstanding work and all of their efforts in making our Town a beautiful place to live and grow," Dancy said, in signing the proclamation. The club also takes care of plants at Charlotte and Washington Streets and Crestview Park. "I'm privileged to be a part of this great organization and all we do to beautify our town," Van Jura, Rutherfordton Garden Club President, said. "I enjoy the fellowship and the continuing education at our monthly meetings." Van Jura said new members are always welcome and being a resident of Rutherfordton is not required. Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at the Rutherfordton Clubhouse. "We are now working on our Christmas wreath orders...our only fundraiser," she said. "We appreciate the continued support of the area businesses that make this a success," she added. As the celebratory year continues, the club is proud of the fact it's one of the oldest garden clubs in North Carolina. Article Provided By: Jean Gordon. Photos Contributed.
