Helping to spearhead the golf tournament to be held at Cleghorn Golf and Sports Club are Bill "Gunny" Swope and Troy Stanley of the Marine Corps League. "We need 26 teams to participate in the tournament," said Stanley. All money raised will go to veterans in Rutherford County who are in need. Money raised will go to help homeless vets, those who have food insecurities and those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). "Many of the veterans with PTSD are homeless and they probably always will be," said Swope. They also said some veterans who are needy but have too much pride and would never ask for help. "This money goes directly to the Veterans Relief Fund administered by the Marine Corps League. The money raised will help with whatever individual needs the local veterans have. Each month the Marine Corps League donates $2,500 to purchase food for veterans. The food is distributed through the Veterans Service offi ce in Spindale, Stanley said. Swope, who does the grocery shopping for meats, said he buys steaks, chicken, pork chops and sausages to distribute to veterans and families. "So we need all the teams we can get," Stanley continued. "This is a big deal," Stanley said. "Last year we raised thousands of dollars and we want to do the same this year." The tournament on Nov. 10 marks the third golf tournament sponsored by the Marine Corps League to support veterans. There is a need for team sponsors and other sponsors. The tournament begins at 11am with lunch and a shotgun start at 12 noon. To be a sponsor, to make donations or to form a team call Stanley at 828-447-8526 for more information. The tournament will be played rain or shine. Last year's event was held in the cold and rain, "but we still had it," said Swope. MAYSE MFG. Article & Photo Provided By: Jean Gordon Gunny Swope and Troy Stanley are excited about the upcoming Golf Tournament to benefi t veterans, and the kick off of the annual Toys for Tots drive. 26 teams needed for Veterans Golf Tournament All proceeds will go to help veterans in the county Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey is encouraging families to, "Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fi re prevention." "It's easy to lose focus when you're cooking, especially if you're entertaining kids," said Commissioner Causey. "So many fi res happen because people are simply not paying attention in the kitchen or on the grill. Keeping a close eye on what you're cooking could help prevent fi res and save lives." Cooking is the leading cause of home fi res and home fi re injuries, according to statistics from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA): • U.S. fi re departments responded to an estimated average of 158,400 home structure fi res per year started by cooking activities between 2017-2021. • These fi res caused an average of 470 deaths & 4,150 reported injuries annually. • Ranges or cooktops were involved in the 53% of reported home cooking fi res, 88% of cooking fi re deaths & 74% of cooking fi re injuries. • Unattended cooking was the leading cause of cooking fi res & casualties. So far in 2023, there have been 104 fi re deaths in North Carolina. Last year, there were 151. Commissioner Causey also offers these important home cooking safety tips: • Always keep a close eye on what you're cooking. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully. • Clear the cooking area of combustible items & keep anything that can burn, such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, & paper towels. • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fi re starts, slide the lid over the pan & turn off the burner. • Create a "kid & pet free zone" of at least three feet around the cooking area & anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
