Eat The Pisgah National Forest's Grandfather Ranger District, along with its community partners in Old Fort, is proud to announce the construction of the 3-mile Lower Heartbreak Ridge mountain biking and hiking trail. Construction will begin immediately, with an anticipated trail opening by spring 2024. The Lower Heartbreak Ridge Trail is part of the 42- mile trail expansion planned in the Old Fort area that was recently recognized with $2.5 million in funding by the state of North Carolina. The new trails are the product of the U.S. Forest Service collaboration with Camp Grier's G5 Trail Collective and the Catawba Vale Collaborative, which is revitalizing Old Fort through community development. The Lower Heartbreak Trail is a key connection that will realize the vision of connecting from Mount Mitchell to the Town of Old Fort almost entirely on singletrack trail. "From just below Mount Mitchell on the Blue Ridge Parkway, this long-desired link will connect over 10 miles of trail dropping 3,400 feet in elevation from the highest peak east of the Mississippi River to the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Old Fort," explains Lisa Jennings, Recreation and Trails Manager for the Grandfather Ranger District. "The ridgeline that Lower Heartbreak follows is characterized by fi re- adapted pine forests with sweeping views that are the best we've seen on trails in this area." The new Lower Heartbreak Ridge section will link from Jarrett Creek Road at the end of the existing Heartbreak Ridge and Star Gap East trails to the Copper Ridge Section of the Fonta Flora Trail, connecting users from the backcountry trails to Mill Creek Road in Old Fort. "This is the critical link that started the dream of new trails in Old Fort, and it is the one trail that literally connects the town limits to the Pisgah National Forest for hiking, biking, running, and backpacking," says Jason McDougald, executive director of Camp Grier. "We wouldn't be building this trail without the ongoing support from our community and the McDowell County Tourism and Development Authority." In addition to the McDowell County Tourism and Development Authority (TDA), funding for the Lower Heartbreak Ridge Trail is provided by a grant from the North Carolina State Recreation and Trails Program and recently awarded funding from the North Carolina state budget. The trail will be built as a joint venture between professional trail builders at Black Diamond Trail Designs and GeoSculpt Trail Designs.
