Dear Editor, It's been said that you can only make a first impression once, so don't mess up. Well Quartzsite, you passed the test. You see, I recently packed my bags, grabbed a few friends, and went on an exploration of America's Southwest. This would be our first time in this land of mountains, cactus, and dirt devils. We crossed the Arizona state line at 2 am and found the first hotel that appeared to be open. Wouldn't you know, Quartzsite would be our first impression of this breathtaking state. Our road trip was based around our country's national pastime: Baseball. We were on our way from a Los Angeles Angels game to see the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Coincidently, baseball was not the only way to celebrate America on this excursion. Our nation was honoring those that served and sacrificed on this Memorial Day weekend. It just so happened that in our short time in Quartzsite, a service would be held at a cemetery near our hotel. We drove our Jeep up a dirt path towards the pyramid tomb of Hi Jolly. The ceremony was already in progress as we stepped out of the car and into the 100 degree heat, the sun baking our skin as we admired the graves of those buried beneath the desert gravel. I couldn't help but think it was a familiar Memorial Day ceremony in a most foreign place. But as the service came to an end, we discovered more than a small town, but a gathering of people whose welcome was as warm as the air that surrounded us. As we helped the VFW members fold chairs, the pastor told us stories of the nearby Colorado River. The scoutmaster and his wife explained seasonal climate changes. And everyone we talked to was proud to mention the town population in January during the annual swap meet. It was an experience that many would take for granted, but for us, it was a cultural encounter like none other. To most travelers Quartzsite may be known simply as an exit on the highway or a break in the desert to fuel up on gas and fill up on food. To us, it was our first impression of Arizona. Well done Quartzsite.
