He signed and then presented Mc- Fate the Certifi cate of Appreciation from the De- partment of State Offi ce of the Arizona Secretary of State, in appreciation for her invaluable 70+ years of services and contributions to the State of Arizona. "Your dedication and hard work have made a signifi cant impact, and we are grateful for all you have done!" Fontes also presented her the National Association of Secretaries of States plaque, and the Original Poll Worker Recruit- ment Day Proclamation. "1948 was the fi rst election she worked in Mon- tana. She didn't do it alone nor for herself. She did it for her family, friends, and her community," said Fontes. "You exemplify a lifetime of giving to others, thank you!" One of the stories she told Fontes was from 1948, when she checked in a naturalized citizen who shed tears on her poll sheet, crying because she thought she would never be able to vote. Also in attendance were La Paz County Supervisor Duce Minor, La Paz County Recorder Richard Gar- cia, La Paz County Election Director Bob Bartel- smeyer, Quartzsite Town Manager Jim Ferguson, Vice Mayor Lynda Goldberg, and Council Member Starr BearCat, and Paul Smith-Leonard, Director of Communications for Secretary Fontes.
