5 WHY THEY JOINED BETA "I wanted to find a place to enjoy the spontaneity that college life offers alongside great Brothers." –Alberto Mora Trindiad "I accepted my bid because Beta feels like another family, one that I would be honored to be a part of." –Ryan A. Duarte "Because of the people I found there. I never thought I would join something as 'wild' as a fraternity; however, Beta presented me not with a 'fraternity' but with a family, people whom I could look up to and admire at times." –Raul D. Campos Vellon "I really liked all the Brothers and felt that I could vibe with them well, and because of the speeches given by Brothers at the formal banquet." –Dhruv Saraff BETA UPSILON WINS BIG IN TEXAS Celebrating Convention Awards B eta Upsilon had another successful showing at Beta Theta Pi's 184th Convention in Dallas, Texas, on August 3-6, 2023. Brothers took home several awards, including our third consecutive Knox Award (Beta's highest Chapter award), a Sisson Award for Chapter excellence, and an award for Best New Member Education Program. Our Brothers continue to work hard to rebuild the Chapter culture after the impact of COVID on house residency. We are all so proud of their achievements! Honoring the Koch Brothers The big news at Convention was the awarding of Beta Theta Pi's Oxford Cup to our Chapter (and twin) Brothers David Koch '62 (posthumously) and Bill Koch '62. The Oxford Cup is awarded to Betas who have attained the highest levels of professional achievement. The 89 Oxford Cup recipients include: John Wooden, Purdue '32 Sam Walton, Missouri '40 Senator Richard Lugar, Dennison '54 Bruce Nordstrom, Washington '55 Shad Khan, Illinois '70 Bill and David were both recognized for their lifetime of business success and philanthropic generosity, including leadership gifts to our own Chapter campaign to fund facility renovations. Bill accepted the Oxford Cup on David's behalf and regaled the Convention attendees with stories of life at MIT and Beta Theta Pi in the early '60s as well as his winning of the America's Cup sailing competition in 1992. Bill describes himself and his brother as 'hicks from Kansas,' but his intelligence, business acumen, and interest in helping educate young people are clear from his career success. He also happily posed for photographs with an endless stream of undergraduates who enjoyed his acceptance speech and wanted to share their congratulations. Bill and David are the first Beta Upsilon Chapter Brothers to win Beta's Oxford Cup, and we are honored to have them among our brotherhood! From le: Cody Golden, Texas at Arlington '17 (special initiate into Beta Upsilon), Ken Bryan '88, Mike Feinstein '82, Bill Koch '62, Josh Kuffour '24, Franck Belemkoabga '24, and Beta District Chief Gene Wasserman, Maryland '92 at Beta's 184th National Convention.
