Email: b.cappucci@hotmail.com I f you can name a popular band or music artist, there's a good chance that Tim Hatayama '02 and his colleagues at RTMix have mixed some of their music. Artists Tim has worked with include Paramore, Snoop Dogg, Miley Cyrus, and Bruno Mars—who calls Tim the "Wizard of Oz" for his production skills. "I'm the guy you typically think of who's sitting behind a recording studio console," Tim explained. He went from learning guitar at a young age to playing in bands, and when he tried producing records, that snowballed into a career. As a TV music mixer and Vice President of RTMix, Tim and his team work on the live performance music for shows like American Idol and e Voice; his work on these two shows has landed him seven Emmy nominations. "e easiest analogy is like a chef in a restaurant," he said. "e singers and band on stage with different instruments: that's your basic produce and ingredients. e song style is the recipe. Someone has to put it all together and then cook and prepare it. at's me." Music has always been part of Tim's life; it even introduced him to his Beta eta Pi brothers. Finding Our Bandmates Growing up in Asia, Tim didn't know many people at Purdue. He lived in Cary Quad as a freshman, where he met Dan Griffin '02. ey played in a band together, and Dan introduced Tim to Beta Mu, where he found more brothers who shared his passion for music. "I got rushed by a few other houses, but between music and friends, Beta was an easy choice." Tim met friends in the dorm and his classes too, but the bonds developed with fellow Betas were crucial to his college years. Mentors like Jason Brown '01 helped him survive school and prepare for the future, and there was always fun to be had with his brothers. Tim and another Beta Mu, Jason Marcus '03, started another band that played at house parties around campus. "Being on stage, watching brothers and friends in the audience singing your songs, was special." He also started a weekly open- mic night on campus called "Amateuration," sponsored by the Purdue Student Union Board. Aer graduating from Purdue with a psychology degree, Tim went to Berklee College of Music in Boston; he earned a degree in professional music with an emphasis in synthesis and entrepreneurship. Prior to moving to Los Angeles and working at RTMix, Tim lent his skills to major music releases, commercials, and documentaries in Asia. His latest Emmy nomination (Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Reality Program – b2023), comes from his work on e Voice. Facing the Music rough the nominations and major artists he's worked with, Tim is most grateful to work in a field he's passionate for with a talented, hardworking team. "ere are still some productions/artists we'd love to be part of, but we're pretty content with what we've accomplished in a decade and a half," he said. "We're just fortunate that others believe in our work. Too blessed to be stressed." His advice to fellow Betas: "Get out of the state, the country, the continent; go see the world. Traveling and meeting people of different cultures always restores faith in humanity. We have so many stories to tell." "Also," he said of the Chapter House, "I miss the pool room." You can find more of Tim's credits on IMDb and RTMix.com. 2 BETA MU LINK MEMORY AND OUR MYSTIC SHRINE John D. McDougle '60 entered Our Mystic Shrine on April 9, 2023.
