34 www.DesertMessenger.com September 20, 2023 Winds in Texas delayed its arrival for three days, and then permit issues at the Arizona border added another two days to the journey. Finally, on January 27, the new modular MRI building arrived at the La Paz Region- al Hospital from the factory in Elkhart, Indiana. Installation of the building began on the 29th and is expected to take approximately two weeks. The MRI unit will be delivered on Febru- ary 9. A crane will lift it off the deliv- ery truck and carefully lower it into the MRI building through a roof access. GE Healthcare will have techni- cians available for the following three weeks to set up the machine, calibrate and test it, and tie it into the hospital wide digital imaging online storage. The unit, a new GE 1.5 Tesla Signia Excite High Definition MRI unit, has advanced technology that offers a wide range of MRI studies not available previously. The hos- pital purchased an additional breast tumor detection software package, for detection of small tumors. When mammography is not definitive, an MRI is the next step. The truck that brought the building was over 100 feet long. The building is 15 feet by 50 feet with 750 square feet of space that meets all state and federal specifications for housing an MRI Unit. The building weighs ap- proximately 100,000 pounds empty, due to the shielding required. It was purchased from Simpatico, a division of CSM Group, Inc., a company that specializes in modular buildings for MRI, CT, and PET scans. It is located on the west side of the main hospital structure, with easy access from the new surgery department being built, the current OP areas and the Medical Surgical inpatient unit. "We can compete with any MRI in the State with this machine," said Ber- nie Hatmaker, Director of Imaging Services. "We already have patients waiting for this service. Our imaging department goal is to provide the very best in technology and service to our communities." Smoke fi lled valley QUARTZSITE- Many people saw some- thing very unusual on Saturday morn- ing, January 31. Smoke fi lled the skies and hugged the west side of the valley, laying low to the ground. The smoke reached the areas in the LTVA (Long Term Visitor Area) on the south side of town. The smoke lingered for hours, creating a buzz around town. The Town of Quartzsite was burning excess chip material on their property north of town. Chip material is avail- able to residents to use as compost. What cannot be used or chipped is burned a couple of times a year. Quartzsite Fire Department was on hand keeping their watchful eyes on the burn pile. It is the second year Quartzsite has received this na- tional recognition. The Tree City USA program is spon- sored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Associ- ation of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Quartzsite named Tree City USA® by the Arbor Day Foundation Quartzsite has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive com- munity forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Communities that receive Tree City USA recognition not only have taken the time to meet these four standards, they recognize that: • Trees promote healthier communities. Leaves filter the air we breathe by re- moving dust and other particles. • Trees moderate climate, conserve water and provide habitat for wildlife. • Trees in urban areas reduce the heat island effect caused by pavement and buildings. • Properly placed trees can increase property values, and buildings in wooded areas rent more quickly and tenants stay longer. "A community, its elected officials and its citizens that provide needed care for its trees deserves recognition and thanks," said John Rosenow, chief excecutive of the Arobor day Foundation. The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit, environmental, and education of nearly one million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information on the Foundation and its programs can be found at www.arborday.org. SPECIAL SECTION
