Page 3 A chapter house is much more than just a place to live on campus. It's a hub for activity, fraternal connections, and so much more. Ron Heideman '68-822 has fond memories of life in the Alpha Lambda house, which is why he calls upon fellow alumni to join him in supporting the Building for Our Second Century campaign. HOUSE LIFE IN THE '60S "I wanted to experience fraternity life and pledged winter term of my freshman year, and the house was modern and new," Ron recalled. While some fraternity houses were devoted to particular interests, Alpha Lambda had a unique social atmosphere. Ron enjoyed always being able to find a brother to attend sporting events with, and members could always be found shooting hoops outside. Contributing to the house himself, Ron worked in the kitchen for $50 a month and cooked on the weekends. ALUMNI INVESTMENT "I benefited from having a new house; it was built I think in '64 and I moved in by '68… I got the use of a new house," Ron said. "I just felt it was home to me." The house's aging over the decades made Ron recognize why alumni investments are so important for ΛXA's future. "The longer we wait, it's going to eat into what we have and may actually push us beyond being able to replace it in a timely fashion. I'm really hoping that others see the momentum and jump on the bandwagon so we can make this happen." BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE After meeting some current undergraduate members, Ron is glad to know alumni contributions will benefit a well-maintained atmosphere for brotherhood. "The members I've met are intelligent and are motivated for education," Ron said. "There's quite a future there. If you've got members that are excited, you've got to keep them active and give them reasons to stay excited and bring in others." Today's members will have a profound impact on the future Brothers who will occupy the next home of ΛXA at OSU. "Even with a new house, we struggled to get membership up in '67-'69. We only got it to two-thirds full. Our current membership is more than double that—it would be a shame to lose that leadership on campus." Ron hopes that fellow alumni are compelled to join capital campaign and invest in the future of Lambda Chi Alpha at Oregon State University.
