"No Way Out" (1987): Costner is terrific as a Navy man caught in intrigue after his secret lover (Sean Young), the mistress of a government bigwig (Gene Hackman), is accidentally killed. "The Untouchables" (1987): Costner successfully reinvents Treasury man Eliot Ness, who pursues mobster Al Capone (Rob- ert De Niro) and partners with a veteran Chicago cop (Oscar winner Sean Connery) in director Brian De Palma's film. "Bull Durham" (1988): Costner cements his amiable-athlete image in this baseball comedy, teaming him romantically and memorably with Susan Sarandon (though co-star Tim Robbins was her real-life partner for many years). "Field of Dreams" (1989): Ask any man what his favorite Costner movie is, and chances are good that this baseball-diamond-building drama is the one. The picture en- compasses many great performances, also including those of Ray Liotta and (in his last movie appearance) Burt Lancaster. "Dances With Wolves" (1990): Costner became a film auteur relatively early on, directing and starring in this Oscar winner about a Civil War lieutenant who truly goes his own way. With his multiple accolades here, Costner shot to the top of virtually every producer and casting director's "want" list. "JFK" (1991): This really is director Oliver Stone's film, but Costner is fine as District Attorney Jim Garrison, leading a massive cast packed with stars from Kevin Bacon and Tommy Lee Jones to Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. "The Bodyguard" (1992): It certainly isn't the most pro- found movie ever made, but it sure is entertaining. Costner plays a former Secret Service man hired to protect a threat- ened superstar (Whitney Houston), and sparks fly between them; the film also yielded a top-selling soundtrack led by Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." "Tin Cup" (1996): As a golf pro who rediscovers his lost ambition, Costner is excellent, matched excellently with Rene Russo as the picture's central romantic couple. bestof ...
