With its theme, "Colfax — Where People Come Together" — the Colfax Free Fair & Ellenboro School Carnival gets underway Tuesday, Sept. 19 and runs through Saturday, Sept. 23 at the old Ellenboro school grounds off Hollis Road. The midway rides will run Wednesday, Sept. 20 through Saturday evening. The exhibit hall, food vendors and games will be each night. The Colfax Free Fair began in 1928 when Ellenboro High School agriculture teacher A.B. Bushong had a vision for a place where farmers could display their products from the previous season and families would have a place to come for fun. There was never an admission cost, making it possible for everyone to attend. The fair is celebrating its 95th year of families coming together. Our daddy went to Ellenboro school and he often told us the story of Mr. Bushong and his desire to help the community and families. It was a great time for farmers to "show off" their products. Since the fair was at the school, Daddy said one of the tasks of the older students was to clean up the fairgrounds every morning after the fair the night before. If the students found money they could keep it. Back in the day, a dollar that might have fallen from a pocket, would have been a gold mine for our daddy. Our parents took us to the fair when we were children and our fi rst stop at the fair was always the exhibit hall. Now that was not our favorite part of the fair, of course, but once we'd seen everything from pumpkins to gourds and canned veggies in the exhibit hall, it was a walk on the midway where we'd ride one or two rides. The fair is somewhat different today than 60 years ago when I was a kid. There's so many other things to offer the community not only in the exhibit hall, but across the midway and on the school property, especially on Saturday. In addition to the exhibit hall, games, food vendors, the popular Ellenboro school sponsored food booth, and rides Wednesday- Saturday, there's an array of special events on Saturday. Wednesday has been designated as Family Night and armbands will be honored all night as well as Saturday from 1 to 5pm. With an armband children and students can ride as many rides as they want for $25. We often rode the Ferris wheel when we were kids and to think about that today, I just about get sick. We also rode the Tilt-a-Whirl and often the Scrambler. We were too brave to ride the Merry-Go-Round and too scared to get on a ride that turned a person upside down. We did that once at the Rutherford County Fair and as kids we screamed our lungs out. When the ride operator stopped and asked if we wanted off, Mama said "no" we were fi ne. We were not fi ne and after that we didn't do that again. On Saturday, Sept. 23 the line up of free live music begins at 5pm with the Southern Gospel group, In His Glory, to be featured in concert. A classic car and truck show is from 1 to 6pm also on Saturday with awards to be presented at 6pm. Eight veterans will be recognized Saturday evening at 6:15pm and each will receive a patriotic quilt made by Jean Dycus Honeycutt. If you enjoy old engines, the tractor and farm machinery display is also Tuesday-Saturday. Bingo is played every day and there are plenty of prizes. Food vendors bring every kind of food you'd want with my favorite still the grilled corn-on-the job. The exhibit hall features competitive things such as canned goods, jams, jellies; horticulture: apples, potatoes, watermelon, pumpkins, gourds, tomatoes, onions; fi eld crops, potted plans and cut fl owers, art and photography, sewing and needlework, woodwork, metalwork, breads, cakes, cookies and other bakery items. The youth division is from ages 5 to 18. It's not too late to enter. Ribbons and monetary prizes will go to the winners. Exhibitor information is available at public libraries, Ellenboro Town Hall, Fagan's Farm or by email: dover/principal@ gmila.com. Monday, Sept. 18 is the date to bring all competitive exhibits to the old school gym from 10am to 7pm. A long time ago our older sister entered her prize-winning gourds at the Rutherford County Fair. Of course when we arrived at the fair on school night, our fi rst stop had to be the exhibit hall and sure enough she'd won some ribbons. That was a biggie. Money that comes from the exhibit hall entries and sponsors will support the premiums, entertainment and a portion will go to the Fiddler's & Bluegrass Convention that will be held on Nov. 18 at the new Ellenboro School. Funds that are remaining will be designated to Ellenboro School. So if you love a fair, check out this year's Colfax Free Fair and Ellenboro School Carnival. Start a family tradition. Grab a chair, sit under the shade of a tree and take time to reminisce at the fair. See you there.
