The problem was the alternator. It quit, drained the battery, and left the car powerless. Sort of like you and me when we try to be positive without a partner to help us. I grabbed my phone when I realized the car just wouldn't start. I looked in my database for the number of my friend who has a rollback truck. I knew he would come and get me. I called. One of his employees answered. And pretty soon was on his way to pick me up. As I listen to my life in this situation, I realize how really diffi cult life can be without friends, and how really wonderful life is with them. I didn't even think for over 1 second about who to call. I knew immediately. I couldn't rescue myself. I needed a friend. Today, you may fi nd yourself in need of help. If not today, some day soon. Who will you call? Listen to your life and make a positive life...with your friends. LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette Phone a friend lately? Many homeowners think they have to spend tons of green to get green in their landscape, but that isn't necessarily so. Home- owners can improve their landscapes without digging themselves into fi nancial holes. These strategies can help anyone save some cash and still end up with attractive gardens and more. • Use stones or gravel for a walkway. If commercially installed pavers or cement walkways are not within your budget, there are some affordable alterna- tives. Flagstone or individu- ally purchased and spaced pavers and pea gravel can be used to create path- ways. Some construction sites even offer free stones when asked. Soften the look with moss or other plants on the perimeter. • Remove some lawn. Lawns can require hours of upkeep that may involve the application of expen- sive fertilizers and weed- killing products that are not always so eco-friendly. Reduce the size of a lawn by putting in a mixed plant- ing bed of perennials or ornamental grasses, or use landscape fabric and mulch. • Look for free mulch. Mu- nicipal recycling centers may offer residents ac- cess to free mulch made from grinding up leaves, branches and other plant debris collected through- out the town. Simply bring a few containers to the re- cycling center and spread the mulch for an ornamen- tal look or to insulate land- scapes over winter and protect against weeds. • Repurpose old items into planters. Old wheel- barrows, barrels, watering cans, and other items can be repurposed into con- tainer gardening vessels. Figure out if items marked for the garbage bin can be incorporated into garden features instead. • Invest in plants that are easy to propagate. Peren- nials are the gardener's friend when it comes to saving money. These plants sprout anew each year, and many, such as sedum, catmint, ferns, hostas, and black-eyed Susans, can propagate by division. Figure out the best times of year to divide the plants and start grow- ing them in individual con- tainers before planting the sturdy new shoots in the ground. A single variety of plants grouped together in mass plantings is afford- able and easy. • Shop end-of season sales. Garden centers may begin to make room for holiday items come the fall. Take advantage of reduced costs on remaining plants and landscape accesso- ries during this time of year. Plants can be covered or allowed to thrive indoors until they can be planted in the spring. • Pool your resources. Homeowners planning on a big landscaping or revi- talization project may want to speak with neighbors to see if they're interested in doing the same. Contrac- tors guaranteed business from a few homes in the same neighborhood may be willing to negotiate low- er prices for the volume of work on things like drive- way repaving, deck- or fence-building, or installa- tion of paver patios. Some handy ideas can help homeowners trans- form landscapes without spending too much. Revitalize your landscape on a budget
