RETAILOBSERVER.COM SEPTEMBER 2023 62 I n our fast-paced lives, home appliances can play an important role in simplifying our daily tasks. But like any mechanical device, they are vulnerable to wear and tear. When they need service, the inevitable question is: "Should I repair it or replace it?" Let's be honest, these situations never come at the best of times, and making the right or wrong decision can save – or cost – hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Let's explore some industry wisdom that will tip the scale toward the happiest possible outcome. PROS OF REPAIRING HOME APPLIANCES: 1. Cost-Effectiveness: Repairing is often the budget-friendly option. The National Association of Home Builders reports that appliance repairs typically cost 30-50% of the price of a new replacement. 2. Reduced Environmental Impact: Another advantage of repair is the positive environmental impact. The EPA reports that repairing an appliance instead can save up to 50 lbs of electronic waste. Given the growing concern about e-waste, repairing can contribute to a more sustainable future. 3. Familiarity with Appliance: Over time, homeowners become familiar with their appliances. Repairing the appliance preserves the familiarity and eliminates the need for re-learning. CONS OF REPAIRING HOME APPLIANCES: 1. Increased Repair Frequency: As appliances age, they are more likely to require repairs. A Consumer Reports study found that the average lifespan of major home appliances is 9-15 years, after which repairs become more frequent. 2. Outdated Technology and Efficiency: The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) reports that modern appliances are 20% more energy-efficient than those manufactured a decade ago. While repairs can address immediate issues, they won't enhance an appliance's performance and efficiency. PROS OF REPLACING A HOME APPLIANCE 1. Improved Energy Efficiency: Newer, more energy-efficient appliances reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills. The DOE says that newer ENERGY STAR-rated models can save a household approximately $500 annually. 2. Enhanced Performance and Features: New appliances often come with cutting-edge technology and features that simplify tasks and improve functionality. Smart appliances can be controlled remotely, optimizing convenience and comfort 3. Manufacturer's Warranty: A new appliance typically comes with a manufacturer's warranty offering free repairs or replacement for 1-5 years, on average. A warranty offers peace of mind and protects homeowners from unexpected expenses. CONS OF REPLACING A HOME APPLIANCE 1. Higher Up-front Costs: The obvious drawback of replacement is the up-front cost. The NKBA estimates the average cost of replacing a major home appliance at $350 to $3,000 depending on type, brand, and features. 2. Environmental Impact: While modern appliances are more energy- efficient, their manufacture and distribution contribute to the carbon footprint. Manufacturing requires raw material extraction, energy consumption, and transportation, all of which impact the environment. And your old appliance will most likely end up in a landfill. 3. Feature and Quality Changes: With environmental impact playing a major role in appliance design, newer appliances may not perform like their predecessors. Factors such as using less water and mechanical energy, and increased sensor integration may cause cycle disruptions that homeowners formerly never experienced, and that might require a learning curve. The decision to repair or replace calls for a careful analysis of the pros and cons of each option. Repairing is often more cost-effective and environmentally friendly, while replacement offers improved efficiency and features, plus warranty protection. By taking all of the factors into account, consumers can align their repair-or- replacement decisions with their budget, environmental values, and long-term goals.
