Page 12 August 14 - 20, 2023 Paul Newman had been a movie star for a number of years by the time he made "Harper," but the 1966 private-detective tale refined his screen image in a way that would last for the rest of his career. Turner Classic Movies shows the mystery Sunday, Aug. 13, as part of a "Summer Under the Stars" day devoted to Newman – who displays a cynical detachment as Lew Harper that makes him great fun to watch as the sleuth interacts with various suspects in a man's disappearance. Lauren Bacall, Robert Wagner, Shelley Winters, Julie Harris and Pamela Tiffin are among those questioned, with Janet Leigh and Arthur Hill also on hand. Interestingly, in the Ross Macdonald novel that inspired the film ("The Moving Target"), the main character was named Lew Archer … but Newman's success with movie titles that started with "H" ("The Hustler," "Hud") prompted the switch to "Harper." Perhaps that was overly superstitious, but the result here was another "H": a hit.
