Page 4 August 7 - 13, 2023 "The Jerk" (1979): Under Carl Reiner's direction, Martin – who returns in the third season of "Only Murders in the Building" Tuesday, Aug. 8, on Prime Video – broke into movie stardom in a big way as a homebound simpleton who inadvertently becomes a worldly tycoon. "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" (1982): Though it's mainly notable for director Reiner's technical expertise, which involves matching scenes from earlier movies, this film-noir tribute offers a fine Martin as a 1940s-vintage private eye. "All of Me" (1984): Reteaming with director Reiner, Martin does complicated and hilarious work — in tandem with Lily Tomlin — as an attorney who inherits a deceased client's spirit, literally. "Three Amigos!" (1986): Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short play actors who become a cut-rate "Magnifi- cent Seven" to save oppressed Mexican villagers. "Roxanne" (1987): This clever update of "Cyrano de Bergerac" casts Martin (who also wrote the screenplay) as a long-nosed fire chief who courts a woman (Daryl Hannah) via one of his team members (Rick Rossovich). "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (1987): Relative- ly few Thanksgiving movies are classics, but John Hughes' comedy pairing Martin and John Candy is one of them. "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (1988): Martin and Michael Caine make a great team as con men who compete over an heiress (Glenne Headly) and her money. "Parenthood" (1989): Less serious than the most recent television series that was based on it, director Ron Howard's tale of family relations features Martin as the head of the clan. "Father of the Bride" (1991):In a well-moderated per- formance, Martin makes a delightful successor to the original version's Spencer Tracy as a dad who has a hard time embracing his daughter's (Kimberly Williams) impending marriage ... and her fiancé (George Newbern). "Cheaper by the Dozen" (2003): Very much in "Father of the Bride" mode, Martin still makes a warm father figure in this remake of the true tale of a large family. bestof ...
