July 24 - 30, 2023 Page 9 word search solution With good looks, charisma and stunning talent, Oscar De la Hoya – a young Mexican American from East los Angeles – took his boxing skills to Olympic gold, earning fame and fortune for his dying moth- er along the way. De la Hoya dives deep into his toughest battles – both in and outside the ring – in this all-new, HBO original docuseries, premiering Monday, July 24, on HBO. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She's also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image… that is, until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics. InFocus "Dark Winds: Season 2" (AMC+ — July 30, Season Premiere) Based on the iconic leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, this mystery drama series returns for a second season. lt. Joe leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) reunites with Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), his former deputy turned private eye, when their separate cases bring them together in pursuit of the same suspect. They find themselves in the high desert of Navajo Country chasing a killer who's turned his sights on them to protect a secret that rips open old wounds and challenges leaphorn's moral and professional code. Jessica Matten co-stars. Gerard Butler often doesn't get enough credit for his versatility, but he's run a gamut of roles from ro- mantic lead to cunning villain. The latter sort of part comes into very sharp focus in "Law Abiding Citizen," an engrossing 2009 melodrama that HBO shows Monday, July 31. Cleverly written by Kurt Wimmer ("The Recruit") and sharply directed by F. Gary Gray ("The Negotiator"), the film is a revenge drama at heart, but there's more on its mind – as enunciated by protagonist Clyde (Butler), who wants to make points about what he perceives as weaknesses in the American justice system, underscored for him by the plea deal struck by a home invader who killed Clyde's wife and daughter. A particular target of Clyde's wrath is Philadelphia prosecutor Nick Rice (an appreciably low- key Jamie Foxx), who engineered the deal, and he soon has to deal directly with Clyde when the latter confesses to the brutally calculated murder of the homicidal home invader (played by Christian Stolte, in quite a change from his likeable portrayal of Mouch in "Chicago Fire"). Once in prison, Clyde shows that he knows how to work the sys- tem to his benefit, much to Nick's chagrin. For instance, in exchange for supposedly valuable information, Clyde wants a deluxe mattress brought into his cell. And for the location of an attorney who's been buried alive with dwindling oxygen, Clyde insists on a steak dinner with all the trimmings. Nick is resolutely against catering to his wishes, but others in the legal system want to proceed, hoping to acquire what they need to know. Nick and his colleagues learn that Clyde can – and does – use his engineering skills to set up elaborate assaults on those he wants to elim- inate, with other victims including a judge who is dispatched by a very commonly used (but technically en- hanced) device. The message is that no one is safe, emphasized by this statement from an acquaintance: "If Clyde wants you dead, you're dead." moviereview By Jay Bobbin Jamie Foxx and Mi- chael Irby in "Law Abiding Citizen" Gerard Butler isn't exactly a 'Law Abiding Citizen' Full Service Lumberyard 24120-2 C.R. 142 • Goshen, IN 46526 574-831-2378 farmers.hooverlumber.biz
