WebLinks By Adam Thomlison Q: Is Joe Carnahan still making movies? A: Joe Carnahan ("Smokin' Aces," 2006; "Narc," 2002) is the auteur type of director who likes to also write the scripts and do the production, so it takes him a while between projects. But he does have another one on the way. Just a few weeks ago, he started filming "Not With- out Hope," about a group of friends trying to survive after being stranded at sea in the Gulf of Mexico. He is, of course, also producing this one. That means that, though it just started filming, he's already been working on it for a while. Indeed, he's probably been tinkering with it since his last movie, "Copshop," was released in 2021. That one was a typical Carnahan bullet-laden action spectacle. So unless the stranded friends in "Not Without Hope" all held on to firearms when their fishing boat capsized, this one will be a bit of a departure for him. That's not to say Carnahan's incapable of doing any- thing else. Indeed, this new film sounds a bit like his 2011 hit "The Grey," about plane crash survivors in Alaska who are being stalked by a pack of wolves. But it looks like you'll have to be patient if you want to see the end result. As it just started filming in May, "Not Without Hope" doesn't have a release date yet.
