Fort Moore, formerly Fort Benning, is a famous U.S. Army post near Columbus, Georgia, and like Fort Liberty, thousands of young men and women were trained there. It was recently renamed Fort Moore aer Lt. Gen. Harold G. Moore, the author of this book, and his wife, Julia Compton Moore, both of whom are buried on post. Julia Moore led a national effort to support military wives and, most important, changed the way the Army notified families of soldiers killed in action. 5. AMERICAN PATRIOTS by Gail Buckley In Buckley's book, we learn about the contributions of Black soldiers to the American military, from the Revolution all the way through Desert Storm. We meet three legendary Buffalo soldiers and the regiments they bravely fought in during the Civil War. We meet Black patriots who fought in the First and Second World Wars, even while being denied access to equipment and training and subjected to segregation from their fellow troops. We meet Black heroes who served in Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. We meet two families, the Lews and the Pierces, who had at least one member who served in every war since the Revolution. Buckley pays fitting tribute with the true stories and pictures of the men and women heroes who helped all Americans enjoy their freedom. 6. FAYETTEVILLE–FORT BRAGG IN VINTAGE POSTCARDS compiled by the Cumberland County Historical Society With more than 200 postcards, this little book is a great way to learn the history of our city through pictures. In keeping with this month's military theme, did you know that Fayetteville is named for a major general who fought in the American Revolution? e Marquis de Lafayette le France in 1777 to fight for American freedom alongside George Washington. In 1783, the State Assembly of North Carolina gave the name "Fayetteville" to the little town of Cross Creek, and it thus became the very first city named for Lafayette. For more than two centuries, Fayetteville has served North Carolina as a hub for trade and commerce, politics, arts, and culture along the Cape Fear River. But it has always had a military connection. During the American Revolution, our town was a military staging area, supply depot and grainery, and observation post. In the 1830s, the U.S. government started construction of a large arsenal here in Haymount. It was seized by Confederate forces in 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War, and then destroyed by Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in 1865. Camp Bragg was developed on land in western Cumberland County in 1918 and later become Fort Bragg. And so, the city and military have maintained a symbiotic relationship over the years, a relationship that benefited both and that will continue long into the future even with the name change to Fort Liberty.
