e Washington Alpha Delt 2 IN MEMORY OF MEMBERS OF THE WASHINGTON CHAPTER KILLED IN ACTION OR DIED ONACTIVE DUTY 1939-1945 To make a long story short, the mystery unfolded as so: In early March 2023, Brother Brent Schlosstein '85 sent out an email to Alpha Delt alumni proclaiming the news of a radio story that a statue belonging to a UW fraternity honoring World War I veterans was found in a local house and successfully returned. Here is the story behind that story: When Washington Chapter vacated the Chapter House in September 2020 in connection with the planned demolition/reconstruction, the treasured Brothers in Arms (BIA) statue mysteriously disappeared. This happened the night before it was scheduled to be removed for safekeeping. That was disheartening and sad and resulted in the filing of a stolen property report to the Seattle Police. A posting of a reward for information leading to the recovery of the statue was set. But there was dead silence for more than a year. Given the importance of the BIA statue as a World War I memorial to Alpha Delta Phi Brothers who had served, and in particular to the 93 Brothers who made the ultimate sacrifice, and, not knowing that the original would be returned, a replacement statue was sculpted. It was a significant investment, donated by an anonymous alumnus. The replacement BIA was stored in a safe place until the remodeled house was reopened. The new statue was reinstalled in February. It now stands securely in the foyer of the Chapter House. A restored plaque commemorating the four Washington Brothers who died while serving WWII was also placed on the newly polished marble base. We now have two BIA statues. Curiously, an email was sent to the ADP Built to Last website (adphibuilttolast.com) by an anonymous person in early February 2023 who claimed to have information about the whereabouts of the original BIA. It was in a house located in a nearby suburb. J.P. Furber '84, working with Bob Gilbert '81 and other alumni, took the initiative of figuring out the best way to get the BIA safely back in our possession. Through a collaboration with the whistleblower and police working in two jurisdictions (Seattle and Auburn), they deftly secured the return of our beloved BIA on February 28, 2023. Mysteriously, this is not the first time our statue has gone missing- but-later-recovered. The previous instance occurred in 2001, shortly after the temporary suspension of Washington Chapter. A couple years later, the FBI called then-Alumni President Brad Furber '86 to report that they had come into possession of a valuable statue and property of ADPhi. The FBI noted the signature of Robert Ingersoll Aitken. He was the famous artist who designed the West Pediment of the United States Supreme Court building, which bears the inscription "Equal Justice Under the Law." The recovered BIA statue was thus stored securely by Jon Roberts '86 until 2008, when the Chapter was reopened. The good news is that Washington Chapter is once again endowed with our beloved and famous Brothers in Arms statue. A miniature version of the BIA is pictured below donated by deceased Brother Richard Loudon '52. Thanks to all, and Xaipe, J.P. Furber '84 Brad Furber '86 Undergraduate Brothers celebrate the return of the original Brothers in Arms Statue to the Temple. A big thank-you to Detective Frank Poblocki and his team for all that they did to bring the BIA Statue home. e Brothers in Arms Statue Is Back | e Story Behind It All GEORGE CHANDLER 1939 WARD WORTMAN 1939 LAWRENCE YOUNG 1940 ROBERT VAN RAADSHOOVEN 1941
