Washington Alpha Delt Washington Alpha Delt e e A PUBLICATION OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST ALUMNI OF ALPHA DELTA PHI • SUMMER 2023 I t has been one year since we returned to the rebuilt and remodeled property now referred to as the Temple. While the beautifully designed changes look amazing, it has been even more rewarding to see how our undergraduate members have settled in and are actively making the Temple and Alpha Delta Phi a relevant part of the collegiate experience at UW again. Some of those stories are highlighted in this issue. WHAT'S INSIDE On page 2, undergraduate President Nick Utgard '25 describes the efforts of the undergraduate Chapter to reestablish traditions and successfully recruit new pledge classes, bolstering the personnel element of the "Reboot, Rebuild, Sustain" charge that was established at recolonization. On page 3, read a feature on Niko Carste '25, how his time at Alpha Delts has manifested itself during his collegiate experience, and the career opportunities he's had. Also in this issue are excerpts from an outstanding report on the Chapter earlier this year by ADPhi International Chapter Advisor Mike Crowe, which provides an inspiring, third-party perspective on the successes of our undergraduates. And last but certainly not least is a recap by Preston Ball '23 and Ethan Staas '24 of the recently rebooted Bubble Bash Auction charity event. All these stories come in addition to achieving the highest priority of maintaining a top-five house GPA through the first two quarters of the 2022-23 school year. REBUILDING A HIGH STATUS The undergraduate members are clearly filling the very large footprints of the Brothers who came before, and they are well on their way to returning the Washington Alpha Delts to their status as one of the premier houses on the UW campus, both in facility, scholastics, social engagement, and philanthropic energy. The "Reboot, Rebuild, Sustain" model that was established at recolonization has now effectively achieved the first two of these milestones. Now, effort must focus on identifying the elements required to "Sustain" this progress for future generations. Given our rich and lengthy history, the sum of what the Washington Chapter represents to the alumni is many. However, none is more basic than instilling in our Brothers the expectation of the highest levels of personal excellence and achievement that foster Samuel Eells' original vision of developing the "intellectual, social, and moral" values of our undergraduate members. As alumni, we must commit to having regular interactions with the undergraduates that support their academic and professional pursuits. HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED For the PNW alumni, with a current membership of approximately 1,200 Brothers, familiar activities like Homecoming, I-Week, and the Eells Cup will always happen. But alumni can and should want to share their professional and life experiences as examples for the undergraduates' growth. Simple events like a post-weeknight dinner presentation, an on-site afternoon visit to your shop or office, or providing a summer internship are just a few of the many ways to engage. We can mentor undergraduate EC officers and committee chairmen, J-Board, or recruitment chairmen. We can carve out time to help with the Bubble Bash and host recruitment events. There truly is no limit to how we can contribute. So, when you have an idea of how you can engage with the undergraduate members, please contact me and/or the undergraduate house president, and we will be happy to plan the specifics. Alumni participation is critical for maintaining the current momentum, not just in the immediate future, but continuously. Interaction with the undergraduates will help to further differentiate the Alpha Delt experience at UW from the rest of the competition! We, as an alumni community, have a wealth of experience, exposure, and enthusiasm that can motivate the undergraduates along their own paths by sharing our stories and lessons. This will ensure that the legacy we are reinforcing now will be sustained for decades to come. LET'S CONTINUE OUR LEGACY Two final, yet critical, topics must be included with emphasis here. First, please remember to recommend high-quality high school graduates and Alpha Delt legacies to the recruitment chairmen. That information is located on page 8. As an organization, we cannot be bashful about promoting the excellence of ADPhi at Washington to attract the best and brightest from every available resource. Finally, the Alumni Board is always interested in adding members to our leadership group, from all classes of our graduates. The turnover of board members is a regular event, and we currently have openings that should be filled before the start of the 2023-24 school year. Please contact me for more information, meeting schedules, and other ways to support the board's efforts to sustain and grow our legacy at the Temple. To conclude, on this (unofficial) one-year anniversary of the reestablishment of the Temple at the corner of 47th and 21st, please consider ways you can contribute to this final—yet continuous—phase to sustain our next century of scholarship, brotherhood, and leadership at UW Alpha Delta Phi. "Manus Multae Cor Unum"—as true today as it was 191 years ago.
