Turner Classic Movies shows the 1954 picture Saturday, June 24, with Marlon Brando sparking the emotional and sometimes phys- ical action as a boxer turned dock worker who takes a dangerous stand against his brutal boss (Lee J. Cobb). Directed by Elia Kazan from Budd Schulberg's script (with a music score by Leonard Ber- nstein), the saga marked the film debut of Eva Marie Saint, who won an Oscar here — as did Brando. Overall, the movie earned eight Academy Awards including best picture. Rod Steiger, Karl Malden and such then-uncredited talents as Fred Gwynne, Martin Balsam and Pat Hingle also appear. (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, June 18): Before "The Andy Griffith Show" signed off, the series set up a spinoff by introducing likable Ken Berry as Sam Jones, a farmer and town councilman who's also a wid- ower father like Griffith's Sheriff Andy Taylor. Frankly, the overall intention was to keep this show as much like the original as possible, to the extent of transferring a num- ber of the supporting characters.
