INDIANA GAMMA CHAPTER T he ΣAE Little 500 bike team had an outstanding performance at the 72nd running of the Little 500 on April 22. Our young riders rode a strong race and finished sixth, racing with the leaders on Lap 200. The overall season was a huge success for the ΣAE team, with a third- position qualifying effort and solid results in the IUSF Spring Series events, ITTs (Individual Time Trials), and Team Pursuit. The 2023 ΣAE riders are sophomore Luke Naas '25 from Indianapolis, Indiana, sophomore Bayden Lutz '25 from Cicero, Indiana, freshman Lucas Lemme '26 from Carmel, Indiana, and freshman Rhett Skvarna '26 from Walnut Creek, California. Sophomore Phoenix Haggard '25 from Ft. Wayne, Indiana, served as the team alternate. The coaches this year were Bill Naas '95 and Travis Verhoff '14. Additional ΣAE Gamma Cycling Alumni Group members include Brent Burke '77, David "Bear" Barrick '79, and Jim "Fish" Fissinger '83. The future of the ΣAE Little 500 program is bright! The day started out sunny and chilly. Alumni, current riders' families, past riders' families, and friends all gathered at the always popular ΣAE Little 500 Tailgate at 11 a.m. Two large tents were set up at the east end of the old Gradstein Fieldhouse on Fee Lane, where everyone enjoyed cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips, salads, desserts, beer, and great fellowship. The ΣAE Team stopped by to say hello and thanked everyone for their support on race day and throughout the season. We are grateful to all the alumni brothers and team sponsors who have supported our Little 500 program over many years. The continued financial support has allowed our team to compete at the highest levels and further our rich tradition. Indiana Gamma Chapter places sixth. Luke Naas '25 holds his own amidst the race leaders. Steve is passionate about both his M&A work and helping his employees build their networks. "It's important to start when you're young; the people you meet will become centers of influence as they get older," he said. "Meet someone for lunch or go to your local alumni association and chat about your college days. Think outside the lines and consider what your next steps can be. If you do that, you'll be lightyears ahead of your peers." B O O S T I N G Σ A E ' S N E T W O R K Today, Steve is honored to serve on the ΣAE Foundation board with fellow Indiana Gamma alumnus (and ΣAE CEO) Steve Mitchell '83. He's especially excited for the Foundation initiative to build nationwide connections among brothers through a new platform. Steve and his family live in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He stays in touch with (and works with) quite a few Indiana Gamma brothers, and he looks forward to his next trip to Bloomington for Hoosiers basketball! Connect with Steve at smburt1@me.com.
