Daily News photo by Rich Greene Linemen and linebackers battle it out during a drill,Wednesday, at Los Molinos Bulldogs practice. FOOTBALL Los Molinos Bulldogs By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor LOS MOLINOS—It’s hard to find a more determined player in the sports world then a senior middle linebacker who’s never had a win- ning season. The Bulldogs have one of those this season in Steven Funes. “It’s all about football,” says Funes of his senior year, adding there’s a sense of urgency for the seniors knowing it’s their last chance. Funes flashes a linebacker’s smile when he talks about the Bulldogs philosophy shift this year — it’s per- fect for his ilk — utilize the big boys up front and bring some more power. “We’re looking to gang tackle and hit hard,” Funes said. Giants 2 First year coach Irvin Maxwell has helped fuel the intensity at early practices with a stricter demeanor between the sidelines at than the Bulldogs have been used to. “I’m not their friend — I’m their coach,” said Maxwell. “I’m not harsh, I’m not yelling, but they gotta’ get in shape.” After years of losing, the players seem to be willing to buy into the more stern approach as well. “We expected it. We all knew that’s what we needed,” senior run- ning back Bryer Whetstone said. Whetstone and returning junior quarterback Sean Conrad give the Bulldogs a couple of dangerous weapons, but the Los Molinos line anchored by a 294-pounder and 264- pounder has Maxwell equally as excited. “We have some big boys,” Maxwell said. Los Molinos will use their biggest athletes on the offensive line only and will sub in quicker players on its defensive line. One player drawing the praise of coaches and players at practice is fullback Luis Camacho. “He’s a powerhouse,” said Whet- stone. “There’s not much that can stop him.” Maxwell said he’s also liked what he’s seen out of tight end Graham Wagenfuhr, Ramon Avalos and of course Whetstone. “I expect a whole lot out of that kid,” Maxwell said of his starting tailback. Like Funes, Whetstone appears to be using his senior year as a major motivating factor. “We’re tired of having losing sea- sons, so we want to work that much harder,” he said. Maxwell said he’s been impressed with the attitudes and heart he’s seen so far, but as Funes simply put it — there’s only one thing on the players minds. “We’re looking for more wins,” Funes said. Rollins, Blanton lead Phillies past Giants PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia 8 Jimmy Rollins hit a three-run homer, Joe Blanton pitched neatly into the seventh and the Philadel- phia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 8-2 on Wednesday night. The two-time NL champions have won 20 of 25 and moved two games ahead of the Giants in the wild-card race. The Phillies entered 2 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the East. Andres Torres and Pat Burrell hit solo homers for the Giants, who have lost three straight. Blanton (5-6) allowed two runs and eight hits, striking out seven in 6 1-3 innings. Rollins singled, tripled and homered off Matt Cain (9-10). He flied out against Jeremy Affeldt in the seventh and grounded out against Guillermo Mota in the eighth. The Phillies have had just two players hit for the cycle in the last 47 years — Gregg Jefferies (1995) and David Bell (2004). Pinch-hitter Domonic Brown blasted a solo homer into the second deck in right with two outs in the eighth, earning the rookie a curtain call from the sellout crowd. It also gave Rollins another chance to go for a double, but he grounded to first. Cain gave up five runs — two earned — and seven hits in six innings. Giants starters are 0-9 with a 5.73 ERA in the last 14 games. Carlos Ruiz put the Phillies ahead 2-1 with an RBI single during a four-run fourth. He has 21 RBIs in his last 19 games. Before Ruiz’s hit, second base- man Mike Fontenot booted Ross Gload’s one-out grounder. The error proved costly when Rollins came up with two runners on and two outs. Athletics beat Toronto Toronto 4 Athletics 5 OAKLAND (AP) — The biggest reason for the Oak- land Athletics’ perfect record this season when leading after eight innings is their stingy relievers. On a day when the normally reliable bullpen failed, Cliff Pennington bailed the team out. After failing to get a sacri- fice down, Pennington managed to win the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning that gave the A’s a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. ‘‘Our bullpen has been the strength of our team all year,’’ Pennington said. ‘‘For the offense to pick them up one time is nice.’’ The A’s blew a 4-1 lead in the top of the ninth but man- aged to pull out the victory to remain undefeated in 51 games this season when they led after eight innings. Steve Tolleson started the winning rally with a leadoff single against Casey Janssen (4-1). Pennington tried to lay down a bunt but was unable to do it before getting two strikes. After Tolleson advanced on a passed ball by Jose Molina, Pennington was looking to advance the runner with a grounder to the right side. Pennington did just that and ended up winning the game when the ball made it to right field. Tolleson easily beat Dewayne Wise’s throw home to score the winning run. Gio Gonzalez allowed two hits in seven innings and Coco Crisp had a homer, two doubles and two RBIs for the A’s, who won their sixth straight home series. Fresno St., Nevada to MWC SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Fresno State and Nevada are leaving the Western Athletic Confer- ence for the Mountain West. Rollins drove one deep into the seats in right to make it 5-1. His shot ended a string of 49 straight innings without a homer for Philadelphia. Burrell cut it to 5-2 in the sixth with his 12th homer in 58 games with the Giants. He has homered in his first two games back at Citizens Bank Park since helping the Phillies win the 2008 World Series. Raul Ibanez hit an RBI triple and Jayson Werth followed with a dou- ble to extend Philadelphia’s lead to 7-2 in the seventh. Torres crushed his 12th homer into the second deck in right field leading off the game. Blanton allowed just one run in the first after giving up two or more in five of his eight previous starts. Overall, he’s allowed 19 first-inning runs in 20 starts this season. Kansas City 51 69 .425 19 Cleveland 49 71 .408 21 ————————————————— Wednesday’s results Oakland 5,Toronto 4 Boston 7, L.A.
