I hate them. I am thinking about trying the Modern Masters desert sand countertop finish kit, which allows you to refinish a countertop yourself. What do you think? Are there other ways I can upgrade my countertops inexpensively? -- Sarah, e-mail Dear Sarah: I do not have firsthand experience with the product you men- tion. However, I have read up on it and find it to be impressive. The cost appears to be about $250 to resurface 20 linear feet of counter. Compared with replacement, that is quite economical. I assume that you're pretty handy with do- it-yourself kinds of projects or you would not be consid- ering this. The product appears to be readily avail- able online, so why don't you take some time to find reviews and personal expe- riences of people who've used it to resurface their countertops? If you decide to move forward, here's my advice: Figure out how much it will cost, how long it will take to complete and how difficult TRAFFIC Continued from page 1A Support group for pet loss,2 p.m., Family Service Agency, 1347 Grant St., 527-6782 Swinging Squares Square Dance Club, 7 p.m., Red Bluff Community Center, 1500 S. Employees cannot volunteer their time when they are on duty. Though Tuesday was the first time the council saw the proposal, Police Chief Paul Nanfito said he got wind of the sug- gestions some time last week and had done some research. Nanfito said he spoke to 40 other police chiefs throughout the state. They were against contracting municipal police services to sheriff departments. The most important thing that would be lost is the level of service, especially response time. The police’s response time is less than 3 minutes for most incidents, Nanfito said. Police deal with traffic, parking and DUI enforcement. The sher- iff’s department does not provide that kind of service. The sheriff is an elected official, which means there could be a new sheriff every four years, Nanfito said. The sheriff’s office already charges for security services during the Red Bluff Round-Up Rodeo, so it could decide to charge for traffic control, too, Nanfito said. “This issue of $24,000-$29,000 is not enough to move to a contract city with the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office,” Nanfito CRASH Continued from page 1A between a 2007 GMC van and a 2008 Toyota Tundra in the northbound fast lane at 12:45 a.m. The Toyota, driven by Braydon Tweed, 18, of Fresno was going north in the fast lane about 70 mph behind Robert Becker, 74, of Oak Run who had slowed to about 20 mph. Tweed became distracted by an emergency patrol vehicle that was passing on his right side and rearended Becker’s vehicle. Tweed, his passenger David Echeverria, 18, of Fresno, and Becker’s pas- senger Summer Burson, 10, of Redding were uninjured. Becker and his passenger Ivan David, 30, of Hender- son, had minor injuries, but said they would seek their own aid. Becker’s passenger Shannon Burson, 36, of Redding was taken to Mercy while passengers Sandra Jewell, 53, and Tanara Kemnitz, 28, both of Redding, were taken to Shasta Regional Medical Center in Redding. it's going to be. Then double all three -- the time, effort and money. That probably will come very close to reality. Good luck! This looks like a great project that could Lucy and Ethel are in the candy factory and the candy keeps coming faster and faster. Needless to say, I have the cleanest kitchen floor in town. Best of all, my car mats turned out beauti- fully. -- Kathy S., Texas give you a brand-ne w appreciation for your kitchen. Dear Mary: I must share my funny dishwash- er story with you. I was intrigued by your idea of washing car mats in the dishwasher. However, I made a terrible mistake. Because my mats were stained, I saturated them with spray-on Oxi- Clean. Then I placed them in the dishwasher and added my regular dishwashing soap. I turned on the machine and left for the car- wash to take care of the out- side of the car. When I returned, I found my dish- washer foaming at the mouth! Suds were every- where and still coming. It reminded me of the scene in "I Love Lucy" in which said. Sheriff Clay Parker said Wednesday he is in favor of charging for traffic control. “If in fact that was somehow our responsibility, special events would have to cover those costs,” he said. The discussion of having the sheriff’s department take over for city police has been going on for at least 10 years, but Parker’s department has never received a formal request from the city, he said. Even if that request were to be made now, there is no way a contract would happen any time soon. With a new sheriff taking over in the January 2011, it is going to take him at least four years to learn his job. During Tuesday’s meeting, Council- man Forrest Flynn made a motion direct- ing staff to bring the three proposed solu- tions with recommendations back to the council at a future meeting. The motion died for lack of a second. When Mayor Jeff Moyer called for another motion, Councilman Wayne Brown said the agenda item only asks the council to listen to the presentation and no action was needed. City Manager Martin Nichols said Wednesday, since the council took no action on the item, there is nothing staff can do. As for the three proposed solutions, Nichols said, “None of those solve the budget situation.” ——— Tang Lor can be reached at 527-2153, Ext. 110 or by e-mail at tlor@redbluffdailynews.com. That does sound like something Lucy and Ethel would do, except in their case, Ricky and Fred would have walked in on the mess. I have a feeling this is a les- son you won't have to learn again. Moral of the story: Use only detergent made for an automatic dishwash- er. Should you forget and come face to face with a kitchen full of bubbles again, here's the remedy: Open the dishwasher door, and throw in a cup of white vinegar. That will help to dissipate the problem so you can bring an end to the foaming mess. You still will be on your own to clean up the floor. Obituaries BEVERLY F.
