n spring 2019, SigEp at the University of California, Berkeley
was closed. The Alumni and Volunteer Corporation has
continued to meet, to maintain the corporate health of the board,
and to safeguard the chapter's physical and monetary assets with
an eye toward restarting the chapter.
We are happy to announce that both the University and SigEp
HQ have approved a restart date of fall 2024! This won't be easy,
but California Alpha has done it before—and we can do it again.
CURRENT MEMBERS
OF THE AVC
SigEp's strategy for chapter restarts—and membership
recruitment in general—now focuses on the Balanced Man
Scholarship and a supporting marketing campaign. All of this is
backed up by an engaged team of alumni and volunteer mentors.
When asked for advice from experience with a similar chapter
restart at Purdue, Norm Nabhan, Indiana Alpha '71, longtime SigEp
volunteer extraordinaire, said, "My thoughts for you on Berkeley
are that it is harder than we thought it would be! It took us a while
to get the momentum to get the manpower going. When we were
in existence, the older brothers taught the younger ones how to
recruit. Absent any older brothers, it takes a while to teach the new
ones how to recruit."
And that is exactly why engaged mentors are crucial to a restart
across every area of chapter operations. We'll need some local
volunteers, especially a chapter counselor and a Balanced Man
steward, but others could use Zoom from anywhere (today's
undergraduates consider a Zoom meeting to be equivalent to
face-to-face).
If you would like to be part of the
team working toward a future restart
or support the chapter in other ways,
please reach out to AVC President Matt
Bunch at matthewbunch@gmail.com.
