Gould '57 (A880), 86, of Dover-Foxcroft, ME, entered Chapter Eternal on June 27, 2022. Raised in Poland, OH, Chuck earned a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1957. After graduation, he was assigned to the Civil Engineering Corps of the US Navy, reaching the rank of lieutenant. Following his time in the Corps, Chuck joined Raymond International, Inc. where he managed heavy construction projects. In 1967, the president of Liberia knighted Chuck for his work on the Mount Coffee Hydroelectric Project located on the Saint Paul River, twenty miles from Monrovia. He went on to the Mergentime Corporation working on a number of megaproject assignments including the construction of the Metro subway in Washington, DC. Chuck considered his career achievement to be his work on a design-build contract for a nuclear power plant in Michigan. By 1976, he was teaching at the University of Michigan and earned a master's degree in Civil Engineering along the way. After a stint teaching at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, he joined the faculty at the University of Maine in 1989, retiring as a full professor in 2002. Both he and his wife of 55 years, Susanna, were active in their church, and "he spent his time and money investing in other people because he knew what really mattered." Chuck is survived by Susanna, two children, and two grandchildren. Ronald W. Knox '58 (A896), 88, of Hockessin, DE, entered Chapter Eternal on June 28, 2022. Born in Syracuse, NY, Ron spent a semester at Syracuse University before enlisting in the Navy. Eventually enrolling at RPI, he earned commendations as captain of the NROTC drill team. After receiving a bachelor's degree in Management Engineering in 1958, he served in the US Navy, stationed in Norfolk, VA. He subsequently spent six months at sea on the destroyer, USS Massey, before leaving active duty in 1961 and joining the Delaware Naval Reserve. Ron once escorted Elizabeth Taylor to a political reception while serving as Naval Aide to Delaware Governor Pete du Pont. Noted for his ability to recruit enlistees, he rose to the rank of Commander of the USNR before his retirement in 1981. Ron worked for Elliott Service Company, Legg Mason, and Dean Witter before starting Chesapeake Income Advisors. Over the years, he enjoyed performing and directing at the Chapel Street Players in Newark and, later on, traveling with his wife Lilah. Ron is survived by his first wife Phyllis, Lilah, three children and seven grandchildren. John L. Matthews '60 (A928), 84, of Noank, CT, entered Chapter Eternal on July 28, 2022. Born in Syracuse, NY, John went on to graduate from RPI with a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1960. After graduation, he worked for Union Carbide, Carrier, and Industrial Fabrication, before taking on ownership of a hardware store on Cape Cod. Subsequently, he went on to work for General Dynamics before finally retiring from Electric Boat in 2005. John loved golf and watching women' basketball, particularly UConn and the CT Sun. Traveling with his wife of 25 years, Debra, was a passion of his with attendance at the Matthews Family Reunion a highlight. He was proud to be a part of the Theta Xi fraternity and reveled in the reunions with his fraternity brothers. He is survived by Debra, two children, and two grandchildren. Gary L. Lore '73 '74 (A1131), 71, of Bridgeville, DE, entered Chapter Eternal on January 20, 2023. Growing up in Camden, NJ, Gary attended Woodrow Wilson High School before enrolling at RPI and earning bachelor's and master's degrees in Geology. While studying in Troy, he worked at the Lansingburgh Boys and Girls Club, notable for where he proposed to his wife of 49 years, Janet. Upon graduation, he began his 32-year career at the Department of the Interior. Starting as a petroleum geologist in the Offshore Oil and Gas program, he went on to senior management positions in the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico Regions. Later on, Gary became Resource Evaluations Divisions Chief at the Minerals Management Service in Herndon, VA. Author of numerous professional papers, he was a leading expert on the oil and gas resources of the US Outer Continental Shelf. He retired from the Department in 2008. He is survived by Janet, two children and four grandchildren. ALUMNI NEWS___________________ Lloyd Bauer '55 (A826) resides in Clearwater, Fla. Lloyd recently attended the Big Red Freakout at RPI on February 11, 2023, where he participated in the ceremonial puck drop. Rick Gordon '65 (A1024) reported that the 60s gang got together in Deland back in April and enjoyed "lotsa golf!" Gerry Bushey '68 (A1056) was inducted into the RPI Athletic Hall of Fame in April. He played soccer and lacrosse for the school, serving as captain for both teams his senior year. Gerry was a NROTC cadet and graduated with a degree in Management. He subsequently went on to serve as a US Naval officer before joining the family business. He now enjoys retirement in Easton, Md. Congratulations to Brother Bushey!
