Americans' demand for international travel has surged since the pandemic, and the U.S. State Department, which issues passports, is facing a severe backlog. In March, travelers were waiting 10 to 13 weeks for a routine passport application to be processed, according to an article by CNBC.com. For those who applied by mail, the delay was even longer. An expedited application, for an extra $60 plus delivery fees, took seven to nine weeks, the article stated. Processing times continue to increase as the prime summer travel season gets underway. In addition, if your passport will expire within a few months after your trip, you may still be required to get a new one. Some international regions require a U.S. passport to be valid for 90 days after your return date. e State Department's website, travel.state.gov/content/ travel/en/passports.html, has information on passports and what you need to do for urgent travel, such as in cases of serious illness, injury, or death of an immediate family member. Limit restaurant meals. Go out to eat for dinner and buy groceries to make your own breakfast and lunch. You can also save leftovers from dinner for lunch the next day, and take advantage of any hotel continental breakfast available. If your goal is trying as many restaurants as possible, consider splitting meals with your travel companion. Pack clothing options. Even warm- weather destinations can experience a cold snap, so bring at least one long-sleeve shirt or sweatshirt. Otherwise, you'll have to buy one. Include sunglasses, a hat, and an umbrella when you're packing too. Don't visit pricey attractions every day. Although the hotspots are fun, spend some time on free or low-cost activities. Go for a drive, read a book, window shop, or play board games. You'll save money and ensure the vacation includes downtime. A Google search for "free activities in [location]" usually provides options. Spend less on accommodations. A safe place to sleep doesn't need to be pricey. Booking through Airbnb gives you access to local neighborhoods and residents who know the area best; plus, rooms are typically less expensive than hotels. Just read reviews and know who is hosting you. Prefer a hotel? Do research online to find the best deal. Another option is visiting a location where a friend or family member can host you – or spending a couple nights at a hotel and then switching to a budget-friendly option.
