Indiana Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity at Purdue University

E arlier this year, we provided an important update on the status of Indiana Alpha. In this communication, there are several key items that are worthy of reemphasis: Kappa Delta, our tenants at 690 Waldron, exited in November of 2022, as their new house was completed. During their time in the house, Kappa Delta completed significant improvements, which has positioned the house to be reoccupied by our newest brothers in fall 2023. The opportunity to have the brothers back in the house has changed our renovation strategy over the next three years. Since 2015, the SigEp brotherhood has not occupied 690 Waldron; to many alumni, this has been a very concerning issue. We have also had several delays in the house renovation driven by supply chain issues, inflation and, most recently, interest-rate increases. These issues created a level of skepticism about the future of Indiana Alpha. "Will we ever occupy the 690 Waldron?" "Will the renovation actually happen?" We can now confidently put this skepticism behind us, as our new beginning is underway. We are entering year five of The Campaign for Indiana Alpha—A New Beginning. While the capital campaign has been the centerpiece, our plan has included three legs: fundraising, recolonization, and renovation. The first four years have not been without challenges, but thanks to support from our alumni, SigEp National, the AVC board, and our new brothers, we have remained focused on our objectives. RECOLONIZATION We are pleased to report that fall recruiting has been excellent. The chapter is currently at 48 brothers, and we expect additional members by the semester's end. The Balance Man Program has been fully implemented, and our mentor board, which supports each of the chapter officers, is fully staffed. The chapter has now reached a critical mass where the brothers can accelerate recruiting and fully engage as an active chapter on campus. This has been bolstered by the brothers actively utilizing 690 Waldron for chapter activities. The chapter also continues to excel academically, having the highest GPA of all fraternities and sororities, well-above the all-campus average. 690 WALDRON RENOVATION Our renovation committee, Scott Swisher '79, Dave Andrews '78, and Ted Hazledine '66, have been very active, and the project is progressing. The biggest change as of today involves replacing the big-bang, all-at-once renovation we originally planned with a construction plan phased over three years. In our original vision, Kappa Delta would vacate in June 2023 and SigEp would begin demolition and construction throughout fall 2023 and spring and summer 2024. We would then have a grand reopening in fall 2024 with our own young brothers taking occupancy. Given the opportunity to reoccupy the house in fall 2023 and our efforts to manage supply chain, inflation, and interest-rate issues, we will move to a phase of renovation beginning immediately. Our architects, Scholer and Company, and general contractor, Larson- Danielson (Tim '77 and Terry Larson '80), have been working diligently to build a plan that will achieve all our renovation objectives. FUNDRAISING UPDATE We Need Support More Than Ever We would like to thank everyone who has contributed and supported us in achieving our first-level goal of $1.75 million. Our donor goal is to receive donations from 20% of our active alumni of 1,500. Currently, we have 195 donors to our goal of 300, although we are confident this can be exceeded. In many ways, the house is already in better shape than when most of us lived there. That said, the renovation requirements of a 100+-year-old house remain for SigEp to stay competitive at Purdue. Our financing plan has always been to use campaign donations to fund the start of renovations, with the remainder to be covered by a mortgage. The driver of our mortgage, which will fund the balance of renovations, is the house bill from the brothers living in the house. We do not see risk in that plan; however, inflation and interest rates challenge our efforts to meet all our renovation objectives. For this reason, achieving our stretch goal of $2 million is a requirement. We continue with our programs, "One More Donor," "Naming Rights," and the "Mom Nonnie Challenge," all of which are detailed at purduesigep.org. WHAT DO WE NEED FROM YOU? If you have yet to donate, we hope that your concerns have been addressed and you can now confidently make a donation. We need 105 more donors to reach our 300-donor goal! If you have donated, we ask two things. First, reach out to alumni you know who haven't supported the campaign and ask them to support Indiana Alpha as you have. Second, review your own donation. Perhaps, with the certainty we have today, you could now make an additional donation. Or, as we begin renovation, if you have access to goods and services that could support "in-kind giving," please contact us. We look forward to seeing you back at 690 Waldron for Homecoming 2023 and throughout the fall! Fraternally, Jim Mosch '80 Campaign Co-Chairman moschjg@gmail.com Norman E.
