the peninsular | 3 T his school year was been packed with brotherhood events, improved social connections, and continued academic excellence. BROTHERHOOD BONDING One goal this semester was to maximize brotherhood. We did this by instituting chapter meals. This initiative brought everyone together, from new members to seniors, which is a core principle of our fraternity. Becoming friendly with people older than you can help you learn about what's to come in life and gain mentorship. For seniors, being friends with younger brothers gives them a new perspective. In addition, our members bonded during initiation ceremonies, trips abroad for spring break, ice cream excursions, the semiformal in Detroit, and the formal in Toronto. SENIOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS While we had a lot of fun this semester, we pride ourselves on our academic focus. We have a fraternity full of men with impressive career directions. I particularly want to highlight two graduating seniors, Joe Carey '23 and Dylan Marx '23. Joe interned at Raytheon Missiles and Defense in the Strategic Missile Defense and Advanced Weapons Department last summer. He has accepted a full-time job with Lockheed Martin Space after graduation. Additionally, a satellite he worked on and helped build for over a year at UM, MARIO, was launched/ deployed by astronauts on the ISS and is now in orbit. Dylan completed an Engineering Honors Capstone Research project this semester. His research focused on oxygen transport membranes material synthesis. Specifically, he looked at different materials that are resistant to carbon dioxide poisoning and exhibit catalytic properties for processes like the oxidative coupling of methane. He also completed a Capstone project in his senior design class for his chemical engineering degree. For this project, Dylan designed a skincare deodorant that is made for consumers who regularly remove underarm hair. This product is cheaper than others currently on the market, and he was able to prove its effectiveness through various testing methods. UNDERGRADUATE EXCELLENCE As for the undergraduates, Jackson Joyce '24 received an analyst summer internship at Guggenheim Securities. John Abernathy '24 will be interning with General Motors in Warren, where he will work on the fuel systems and brake lines of the C1XX program. Noah Salhaney '24 received an internship at Starwood Capital, a real estate PE firm. Jonah Mathison '25 will be joining Voya Financial this summer as a corporate strategy intern in their Manhattan office. Sam Nolan '24 will be working for GE Aviation this summer in Lynn, Mass. Lastly, Jake Herman '25 is going to be a software engineering intern at GrubHub this summer. He also participates in a startup accelerator program to build out a machine learning schedule-building website for students. SERVING THE COMMUNITY In terms of philanthropy, we want to thank our alumni for the successful Winterfest fundraiser! We raised $4,360 for charity while competing in this event. We also participated in several running events. Some of our junior class ran a half-marathon on Mackinac Island, and Justin Colorundo '23 and Mike Vintzel '24 finished the 2023 Big House 5K. Congratulations Nirav Patel '24 on winning the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service. He was recognized for his work on financial and housing inequality. LOOKING FORWARD It has been an amazing year so far, and we look forward to the future. We are excited to attract freshmen recruits, and we hope our much-improved social events from this year will help our chapter gain attention and improve our reputation on campus. Additionally, we want to build on the bonding successes from this year by continuing to host brotherhood meals and events. We plan to start a new tradition, Beach Weekend, during which brothers would take a trip to a nearby beach town and stay there for two nights at the end of September. We hope you've enjoyed this window into our year, and we appreciate your continued support! Xaipe, Jake Herman '25, President Actives Focus on Building Bonds and Exceeding Expectations IRON SHARPENING IRON Actives chow down on Chela's tacos during the very first brotherhood meal! Jake Herman '25 and Will Czech '23 enjoy a sweet new tradition they call "dairy pushes," which are weekly impromptu ice cream runs. Max Topping '24, Mike Vintzel '24, Dylan Rich '24, Nirav Patel '24, and Elliot Kaftan '24 are ready to run their half marathon.
