Page 3 Recent Research Reinforces the Importance of Greek-Letter Organizations Alumni Volunteers Make a Difference A recent Gallup study found that Fraternity and sorority members are more likely to succeed in college and beyond than their non-Greek peers. They are three times more likely to obtain an internship while in college and two times more likely to have a job waiting for them when they graduate. Students spend 90% of their time outside the classroom. SigEp and other Greek-letter organizations capitalize on those hours by preparing men for success in college and in their futures far beyond what their peers experience. As a result, 83% of members say their confidence in their leadership skills increased because of their membership. A study of thousands of alumni of diverse backgrounds shows this holds true regardless of an individual's background or socioeconomic status entering college. Behind every great organization is a group of valuable volunteers. Because of higher expectations, as well as the support and network fraternities provide, members experience greater academic gains and graduate at higher rates than their peers. Volunteers and alumni are that support, and SigEp could truly not do this incredible work without that support. Interested in volunteering with SigEp? In Memoriam Honoring Jim Schray A "guardian angel" to the brothers at Oregon Beta in the mid '90s, Jim Schray (Oregon Beta Renaissance) was one of the first on scene after the December 1994 house fire, calling son Ian Schray '97 in Portland to break the news. While the house was being rebuilt, Jim focused his efforts and resources toward the exterior of the Chapter House, correctly believing that a beautiful lawn and clean exterior would boost brother morale during the extensive interior remodel. In spring 1995, soon after the house reopened, the Chapter initiated "Brother Pops" as a Renaissance brother with his son by his side, acting as Jim's Big Brother in the ceremony. Jim would later refer to the experience as one of the greatest of his life. Brother Jim Schray entered Chapter Eternal in May 2022. THE VALUE OF THE FRATERNITY EXPERIENCE Research Proves Our Mission Is Important Members experience greater gains in learning and graduate at higher rates than their peers. Fraternities empower students and provide a strong support system. Members are more academically engaged than their peers. 83% of members say their confidence in their leadership skills increased because of their membership. When members seek help, they are twice as likely to turn to a brother than anyone else. Brothers are more connected to their local communities, and they spend more time volunteering than nonaffiliated students.
