3 S igma Chi roots run deep in the Jordan family. Dan Jordan III '87 is one link in a chain of dedicated Eta brothers. The desire to follow in his father's and uncle's footsteps originally fueled Dan's interest in Sigma Chi; however, he soon found other reasons to pursue his place amongst the brotherhood. "Eta is one of the strongest chapters on campus, and I knew I wanted to be a part of that," he says. "I liked how Sigma Chi attracted a wide variety of different types of people." Eta offered Dan a home away from home as well. "I came to Ole Miss from Virginia and didn't know many people. I quickly learned that Sigs were well-liked and had a lot of credibility on campus." Dan knew he wanted to be a part of providing that same opportunity to incoming collegians. He served in several capacities during his years on campus, including IFC vice president, recruitment chairman, judiciary chairman, and Sigma Chi historian. Being a Sig also introduced Dan to a professional network, which opened crucial doors as he considered potential career paths. "My senior year, I met with Robert Khayat, who played baseball with my dad at Ole Miss," Dan recalls. "He made a very convincing case that influenced me to study law." Dan also credits his magister, Doug Boone '85, with giving him a necessary attitude adjustment early in his college career. "My midterm grades were mediocre, and I remember Doug saying he expected a lot better. That really motivated me to turn things around." After earning a bachelor's degree in economics at Ole Miss, Dan received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law by the Mississippi College School of Law. In November 2017, he became chief judge for the Southern District of Mississippi. In recognition of his exemplary career achievements, Dan received the Significant Sig Award, one of the fraternity's highest honors, in 2022. "I was overwhelmed," he says. "The chapter has produced so many outstanding men who deserve this distinction, including a number just in my pledge class." Dan stays in touch with those brothers, both in person and via texts and social media. "There's a real bond that develops when you're a part of something like Sigma Chi. When we get together, we pick back up like no time has passed." Dan recently became more involved with the brotherhood for a very special reason: his son pledged in 2019. "It's fun to see how some things have changed and others have stayed the same. Some of our old traditions, like Groundhog Day, are still there, but the new house is major upgrade and the chapter has grown substantially." Dan resides in Ridgeland, Mississippi, with his wife, Teri. As an empty nester, he makes the most of his free time playing golf and oil painting. His daughter, Anna, is a Baylor graduate living in Waco, Texas. His son, Robert '23, is studying economics and enjoying his senior year as an Eta Sig. "My proudest moment as a Sig was pinning Robert during his initiation ceremony in 2019." If you'd like to contact Dan, send an email to dan_jordan@mssd.uscourts.gov to connect.
