Turner Classic Movies presents the hugely entertaining film Sunday, April 23 – as part of the channel's tribute to Warner Bros. on the studio's 100th anniversary – and it made an immediate star of Christopher Reeve, who landed the central part (and made three sequels) after such names as Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen had been bandied about for it. This really is three stories in one: the infant Kal-El's early life in another world with father Jor-El (Mar- lon Brando); the youngster's upbringing in Smallville; and the grown Superman's battle with villainous Lex Luther (an amusing Gene Hackman).
