No place to call home:
housing insecurity in Northwest Arkansas
Fayetteville is known for its great nightlife and cultural attractions. On any given
evening you can observe people dining at one of the many fine restaurants, taking in a
performance at the Walton Arts Center or TheatreSquared, laughing and mingling in
the popular bars near the university.
But there is another scene that most of us never experience. On any given night in
Northwest Arkansas, there are approximately 900 men, women and children bogged
down by the challenges of homelessness. They come in all ages, races and genders, and
their circumstances can range from couch surfing to staying in a temporary place like
an emergency shelter or pay-per-week hotel, to camping or staying somewhere else not
meant for human habitation.
